Guest guest
Hi again everyone, just checking in. It has been 5 days since surgery (9-16). I started drinking protein shakes the day I got home from the hospital, Wednesday. I was able to drink 4-4 ounce ProScore100 chocolate shakes. Yesterday I started drinking 8 ounce shakes and they went down fine as long as I took it slow and stopped after 3 sips. I am getting in about 60 ounces of water a day in addition to the protein shakes. Last night I was able to take almost all of my medication with crushing it first, the zinc is pretty large so I did crush it and also poured the calcium E in my shake. I am walking every day, even though it is hot out here. Yesterday I even drove my truck and a friend and I went shopping. Actually she went shopping I sat and talked to one of the clerks but didn't need to take anything for pain when I got home. I feel great and find it hard to believe I went thru major surgery on Monday. Thank you again for all your prayers, I felt them as God was holding me in the surgery and recovery rooms. My surgeon said I was alert and laughing and joking in the recovery room asking when she was going to do the surgery. I also kept reminding her, in the recovery room, to be sure to bypass 150 cm. When I saw her in my room a couple of hours later she said yes she bypassed a liberal 150 and was so pleased because I was in such good health from drinking all the protein before surgery. For those having surgery soon, please, please, please start drinking your protein shakes now and try to take in as much as possible -- your surgeon will love you and you will heal faster. I have my first appointment next Friday and will be anxious to see how much I have lost. God Bless you and have a great weekend. in Sacramento Lap RNY 9-16 Dr. Pamela , Burlingame, CA starting weight 380 pre-op weight

Would that be proximal or distal?? I am so glad you are doing so well! How long before surgery did you start the protein? Did you start on the vitamins before surgery also? If so, did you take the post-op dose? Thanks for your help! I wish you all the best! Terri in Ca.

Guest guest
You're the first pre-p I've seen who's taken that much, that long pre-op. I've seen some do the 120g for a coupla weeks and they had nice recoveries. Yours is record-breaking. I think you coulda skipped the hospital and done your surgery at the office between regular pts. LOL! I usually know the benefits of protein pretty thoroughly, but YOU, my little elf, are a whole NOTHER story. Re: in Sacramento Hi again everyone, just checking in. Guest guest
Hi Terri (in CA) and everyone else, to answer your questions: I guess I would be considered medial since it is more than half way between proximal and distal. I started drinking protein shakes 5 months before surgery working my way up to 4 shakes, 120 grams a day for over 3 months. Two weeks before surgery I increased the shakes to 5, 150 grams a day. In regard to the vitamins, I was only taking " normal " vitamins, nothing special except I changed to calcium citrate from the carbonate which I was taking. I am now, one week post op, drinking 4 sometimes 5 8 ounces shakes a day (I am going to be on a liquid diet for 6 weeks, per my surgeon). I started drinking the shakes the day I got home from the hospital, surgery was last Monday and I got home Wednesday. I started taking the vitamins Thursday, crushed at first but I am now taking all my medication uncrushed. I am not taking anything for pain and haven't for a couple of days. Yesterday I went to church and then my friend and I drive from San to Santa Cruz and spent the day at her cabin. So, I was up and out from 9 am to 8:30 last night and then we watched videos until 1:00 am. I feel fantastic this morning, I haven't felt this good in years. I will be seeing my surgeon Friday for my first follow up appointment. I have never, knock on wood, been nauseated and that includes in the hospital. I have slept in a regular bed every night with no problems. I even went up some stairs the other night with no problems. I am heading home to Sacramento in a little while, driving myself, and it is about a two and a half hour drive. My apartment is upstairs so I will have to go up a flight of stairs. Since I am not supposed to lift anything over 5 pounds I am going to have to round up some help to get all my things upstairs. I will let everyone know how it went when I get back and on line again. in Sacramento Lap RNY 9-16 Dr. Pamela , Burlingame, CA starting weight 380 pre-op weight

Guest guest
Hey everyone! My Yahoo group e-mail has been so wonky (my fault!) I'm not sure what mail has gone through and what has not. I was negligent and didn't set my mail preferences (no mail) before surgery and low and behold -- after 1,000+ e-mails from our GBIC, my mail started to BOUNCE and BOUNCE and BOUNCE and BOUNCE. Sort of like Tigger but without hephalumps. I'm finally getting my GBIC mail again (Yea!!!!) and I just finished reading 632 pieces of mail. I wanted to answer each piece (or most of them) personally but there was just too many e-mails. I wanted to say welcome to all the new readers/posters and welcome home to all those that had surgery during my recovery and mail hiatus. I'm going to try and be extra diligent with my e-mail and never, ever get 1,000+ posts behind, again! Here's hoping, right...? I go to my doc/surgeons on Wed. for my 3 week checkup and I am excited and nervous at the same time. My doc/surgeon forbade me to drink protein supplements until after my 3 week check up. I've talked to Jeanne (my sweet angel) about " confronting " my doc/surgeon/dietician about their stance on protein drinks but I'm not the most ... confrontational individual you'd ever hope to meet. I just don't understand their point of view -- they want me to get most of my protein and vitamins, etc., from " real food, " but how can I if I mal-absorb food, I have a 1 oz. pouch and I know longer use the lower/majority of my real stomach..????!!!! Help! (Mom), if you have something I can print out to take to the surgeon's office on Wed. I sure would appreciate it. Guest guest
, thank you for your note. I'm finally home after being in San for a week. It was a long drive and I really hurt when I got here. A friend came over to take my things upstairs for me since I can't lift. I have over 300 e-mails to get thru since I am a couple of days behind. I'm not sure if your question has been answered about 150 cm bypassed -- that means 150 cm of the small intestine were bypassed. Surgeons have different links usually starting around 100 cm to 200 cm, which is how much , Vitalady, is bypassed. I fixed some sugar free pudding with sugar jello and coolwhip but it is not agreeing with me so I don't feel so good.
