Torsten, yaaaaaaaayyyyyyy! We used maltodextrin for our cf daughter and she is

blaming us still for her 5' high sturdy and of course, half German frame; but

the

point is, she weighs plenty, looks great and is still with us at 34! I'm for

whatever

works for one's child.

n Rojas, of course

Where do the calories for maltodextrin come from? I ask because some of the

other products out there seem to depend on sugar and what I classify as " bad

fats " for their calories. It would be nice to have an alternative.

Hi Lori,

maltodextrin is pure sugar. It's not sweet sugar though like saccharose or

fructose but mainly tasteless polysaccharides. It's great stuff to hide it in

drinks and you don't have to think about enzymes, which I feel is an advantage.

What kind of source for added calories do you prefer? Just protein and the " good

fats " ? Well, there are plenty of theories of what is the right diet for pwcf. We

are happy that the high-carb diet works for Fiona and that although she is a

hell of a bad eater we are far away from even thinking about a g-tube (touch

wood).

BTW, we still use our physio ball as a mini-trampoline. I squeeze it into one

corner of the room, take Fiona by the hands ans she jumps on the ball. It's fun!

Bye-bye

I don't only want to add just good fats/protein, but I do want to avoid a

high sugar high bad fat diet. Right now we have been told we don't need to

add supplements, that Scout's weight gain is fine, but I like to know my

alternatives in case that changes. Plus with a toddler you never know day to

day how they are going to eat. On the low days I would certainly consider

" spiking " her juice with something.

I looked up maltodextrin. It gets it's calories from cornstarch. It is a

common food additive. While probably not the nutrient equivalent of a whole

grain bowl of something, it sounds better than most of the other supplements

I have seen. I am going to ask our dietician her opinion of using it or one

of the other suggestions people had to Scout's juice.

(I do have to admit I have become much more conscious of the food we all

eat. I try for whole grains, no antibiotics in chicken, no hormones in meat,

no " round-up ready " soy, etc. I just don't trust the companies marketing to

our farmers to be looking out for the end consumers health. And I do think

the most balanced diet you can get in your kids, (and with toddlers, heaven

knows sometimes anything is a blessing) the better equipped their immune

system will be to fight viruses/bacteria. My husband thinks I let Scout have

too many cookies and juice as it is :) but he doesn't stay home with her all

day either!)
