Guest guest
Laurie, I, too, would suggest talking to your doctor about the possibility of adding Proamatine to increase the blood pressure. I'm wondering about the choking when her legs are elevated....is this because she's in a recliner which puts her head back when her legs come up? I would suggest making sure her back is as straight as possible when eating (prop with pillows, etc. if needed) and can she bring her chin down towards her chest prior to swallowing?--esp. liquids? --this may help too. About the bowel issues, I'd definitely agree about having that checked immediately. Rose ----Original Message Follows---- From: Laurieb9@... There are days where she is in bed all day because her blood pressure is so low, (ex. 60 over 37) for the whole day. Even if she sits in her wheelchair too long, she passes out. She has a strap that goes across her chest to keep her up. Does anyone else have problems like this? If she has her legs elevated while she eats, she chokes. Thanks Rose. Guest guest
Rose, ) Your mom must still be in fairly good shape. You state " can she bring her chin down towards her chest prior to swallowing?--esp. liquids? --this may help too. " ) Charlotte (and others) tend to try to eat while examining their navel ) usually from one side or the other ) Charlotte always leans (tips) to the right (even in bed). Her new chair will hold her from tipping to the right or left, and she will have a shoulder harness to keep her upright. We also added a tray. If the tray is not high enough, I will raise it so she does not need to get the food far from the plate to her mouth. The PT's and I agreed that the chair should tilt back slightly also. It will probably be a pain to clean (as the present wheelchair is), but hopefully it will help her eat by herself. To help her, she likes stuff with gravy or cream of mushroom soup so I leave them a little on the thick side. I have the spoon we got at the rehab center, but have bent some other utinsels to make them hold food in her normal hand position. I cut everything for her before I serve it to her. I have also seen that by the way she holds utinsels, she is better off with a salad fork than a normal fork. A vise and a good pair of channel lock pliers work wonders with a little observation and common sense. Bend a little, test, bend a little, test! Take care, Bill and Charlotte Rose Chable wrote: > Laurie, > I, too, would suggest talking to your doctor about the possibility of adding > Proamatine to increase the blood pressure. > > I'm wondering about the choking when her legs are elevated....is this > because she's in a recliner which puts her head back when her legs come up? > I would suggest making sure her back is as straight as possible when eating > (prop with pillows, etc. if needed) and can she bring her chin down towards > her chest prior to swallowing?--esp. liquids? --this may help too. > > About the bowel issues, I'd definitely agree about having that checked > immediately. > Rose
