Hi Carla

The process is that after you talk to your PCP, He or she will send a referral to the nutritionist and psych. If it is needed you might also get a referral for sleep apnea.

When I went to the nutritionist I wrote down every diet I had done and every treatment I had been through since I was 19. That was 20 years of different things I had done. I had also gone through twice the behavior modification programs. Since I was able to write-down so much I didn't have to take any classes. Although there are many who did have to go through classes before they get referred by the nutritionist. Once the evaluations comeback from the different departments then your PCP will sent the referral to the Bariatric Program In SSF. It is time consuming the process but it is so worth it.

Hi all,

I just got back from my visit with the nutritionist. He tells me

that I need to see my PCP for a refferal which is what I thought I

just did. I feel like I am chasing my tail here. The nutritionist

insists that I need documented proof that I have participated in a WL

program for 6+ months. Then my pcp will give me a refferal to the

dietician. HELP! I'm getting a lot of different information, and I'm

getting frustrated. I'm thinking of changing PCP's to someone in

Santa Clara//Santa Theresa who been throught th refferal

process already. Any thoughts?

Hi Carlita,

When I first discussed WLS with my pcp, I was told that I needed to work

with a nutritionist for 6 months since I did not have a well-documented

history of supervised weight loss. Things differ from Kaiser to Kaiser

and may have changed since I first started my journey . . . but it might

be worth finding out if this is still a requirement for referral. If it

is, then changing your pcp probably wouldn't do you any good.

I know that some folks have had to attend weight loss classes and so on.

I did not have to do that. My work with the nutritionist seems to have

sufficed.

I wish I could say that I knew a way to hasten the process, but I don't.

Maybe someone else here has more recent or helpful info.

All the best,

Kay
