Guest guest
Hi all, Here is a use of stem cell research using stem cells from a umbilical cord and be sure to read the last paragraph. You can NEVER satisfy everyone. Take care, Bill and Charlotte US girl saved by brother's stem cells goes home MINNEAPOLIS, Jan 05 (Reuters) - A 6-year-old girl who underwent a bone marrow transplant with stem cells from a baby brother conceived in part to be her donor went home on Thursday. Doctors said Molly Nash's " prognosis looks great " 3 months after stem cells taken from her brother Adam's umbilical cord blood were transplanted into her bone marrow. Tests this week showed nearly all of Molly's bone marrow was derived from her brother, University of Minnesota transplant specialist Wagner said. Molly, Adam and parents Jack and Nash left for their home in Englewood, Colorado. " The bond already created between Molly and Adam is unlike any other sibling relationship, and we are truly grateful that they will be able to grow up and share a lifetime of experiences together--a lifetime that otherwise would not have been shared, " the father said in a statement. Molly suffers from Fanconi anemia, an often fatal disease that causes bone marrow failure. Doctors successfully screened embryos created through in-vitro fertilization to find one free of the disease with a tissue match to serve as a donor for her. The parents also said they wanted another child free of the genetic disease. The case triggered an uproar in some circles, with some medical ethicists questioning the procedure as a step toward screening unborn children for favorable traits. © 2000, Reuters Health Information Services
