Guest guest
Martha, I know exactly what you are talking about - knowing your kids ears. My children do not have CHARGE but they, like me as a child, all had chronic ear infections. I, too, got a professional otoscope and learned to use it. EAch of my kids had different symptoms with ear infections. The oldest had a one-to-one correlation with fever - if he had a fever, it was an ear infection, and he never had an era infection with no fever. He didn't have pain with it, just fever. Once he had a stiff neck and got a work up for possible meningitis which turned out to be two flaming ear infections. The second had no fever (ever), just pain - blood curdling screaming pain, before anyone could see anything in her ears. Fortunately, the pediatrician knew I knew my kids and he would prescribe the antibiotics right away - the red ears always showed up a few hour later. The third just got lethargic - I knew by her behavior to look in her ears. She occasionally got fever with ear infections. My kids infections were never quite so frequent that I had any standing prescriptions, but the doctors learned to listen to me - I knew my kids. Two of the three had PE tubes. All of them eventually grew out of ear infections into sinus infections - which of course are harder to diagnose and treat. So it goes. Meg Meg Hefner MS Genetic Counselor St. Louis MO meg@...
