Pat,

I generally hate to exercise, although I do find it

gives me a lot of emotional release and a sense of

well-being when I do. Basically, I simply make it a

must-do part of the day and close to the first part of

the day, within two hours of my wake up. I do it

before I breakfast, which is a soy shake.

You must just do it by habit. Do it faithfully, no

matter what. Think of the results you'll get and start

slow and in small chunks.

Hi SK:

I exercise every day too. It hurts a lot, but it just makes me feel better

that I do it. I feel much stronger than I did before I started. I don't

like it if I have to miss, but if I do, I start right back in the next day.

Welcome Kami,

This pain can be awful but seeing a rheumatologist is one of the best things

that you can do. They will help you with your pain. I go to one for my pain

control medication.

This is a good group. Friendly, very supportive and will try to help as much

as possible.

I am glad you are with us and just jump right in when you have something to

say or when the pain is bad and you need someone to talk to.

Take care,

Irene

Hi Kami:

Welcome! I'm sort of new as well but this group has welcomed me with such

warmth that I feel as though I've been for quite some time. :)

I can certainly relate to a lot of what you're describing here. Ringing,

itchy ears, back, neck, sinus, and ESPECIALLY the part about the feeling

that

I'm going crazy!! I'm 47 now but had a complete hysterectomy at the tender

age of 23. I suffer with FMS/CFS, Asthma, and many other illnesses but I'm

trying to stay positive. In fact, I'm in transition right now. Tonight was

my first professional voice lesson and I know now that I DO have something I

can do that doesn't' require a lot of physical exertion. I also collect

ladies handkerchiefs and that sort of helps me through the bad days. If I

start feeling depressed I get out the old hankies and it seems as though the

beauty, nostalgia, and mystique of each single hanky occupies my mind so I

don't think so much about the pain and things I can no longer do. Such as

ride my new Harley son.

If you need support then I strongly believe you have come to the right

place. You might not always get the answers to your questions but you'll

receive a wealth of unconditional love and prayers. :)

Sending goodness your way,

Jazzy

Hi everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself.

My name is Kami. I am 31, married with 2 wonderful kids and living (somedays

EXISTING) in Pennsylvania. I used to work in banking but health problems

have forced me to change my lifestyle a bit so I now refer to myself as a

" Domestic Goddess "

I don't even know where to start with my problems. It appears that I have

fibromylagia or something along that line. I have had numerous health

problems and 4 surgeries within the past 3 years (back, sinus, laparoscopy,

and finally...hysterectomy 12/18/00) I started with severe muscle pains upon

increasing my activities after my hysterectomy. I am currently taking Vioxx

for the pain. I have a doctor appointment Wednesday with my family doctor

and an appointment with a rheumatologist 6/11.

I feel as if I am truly... going nuts. I have NEVER experienced a constant

pain like this. My back surgery was THE WORST pain that went away with

surgery but this WILL NOT GO AWAY!

Anyway, that is my story. I hope to learn alot here as well as share alot!

Take care!

Kami~*

Hi Kathleen!

Welcome to the group!! Where will you be having your surgery? I felt like

there were only 2 people who went to RWC Kaiser and had this surgery, but

now in just one day that number has doubled!! Yay! People close by! lol!

Please post any questions/concerns and we'll all do our best to help you

out. I don't know what the procedures are for KSSF or Richmond patients,

but I'm more than happy to help in any way I can. Feel free to call me or

email me privately (328-8003 or nif@...). And that goes for any

of you people out there!!

Hey,

We're twins here! I'm new to the group and the process but not to Kaiser, however I am new to the Saramento area (well three years but not established with a PCP) and concerned about the PCP issue. The PCP I had when I lived in the Bay Area was my doctor for 20 years and I'm wondering whether I shouldn't go back to him for all of this. I do have an appointment on the 30th but it's with a doctor I've never seen before named Dr. . I too could use the groups thoughts/recommendations.

Where do you live? I'd love to buddy up with you.

HI Carla,

Don't be afraid to talk with your PCP about Gastric Bypass surgery. A majority of the doctors are pretty good about it. Of course you will come across a couple that are not so willing to refer a patient to the Bariatric program. As with any doctor you really need to feel comfortable to talk with him or her about health issues. As we are all realize the health risks of being morbidly obese and that is now being recognized as a treatable disease. If your doctor doesn't want to refer you can always fire him and get one will. There are many within Kaiser that are willing to reefer you.

As for being referred to a nutrition class. Yes, there are many people that are referred to classes. With myself I didn't have to because I was able to give about a 20 year history of every thing and program that I have been to trying to lose weight. I do feel though that the classes are good. They really do try to prepare you for your new lifestyle that you are going to be living once you do have surgery. When we all started the program there were so many of us that thought that I want the surgery now and I don't see any need to go to meetings and classes. But once you start to go to meetings and classes you do come to realize that you really are not mentally ready for surgery.

I had mentioned it several times to my doctor about surgery and at the time Kaiser hadn't started doing it. Then the last time was in February of 2002. He asked me if I was really truly interested and I said yes. He said that he had heard that they were doing surgery in SSF so he said that he would see what was needed to get me into the program. Together my doctor and I learned about the program and what was necessary.

I finally had my surgery on 1/13/2003. So far I have lost 150 pounds.

Every time I see my doctor now he is just so amazed at how healthy I look and am. I am so thankful that I did muster up the courage to ask.

So my advice to you is go for it. When you see the nutrition make sure she does refer you to the classes that way when you see your doctor he will know that you are serious about it and that will help get the ball rolling. It does take time to get all the referral done and the paper work in so don't hesitate too long and ask.

If you have any more questions feel free to email me. My email is Sweetgemlady656@...

Hi all,

I'm about to meet with a nutritionist at Kaiser to discuss gastric

bypass surgery. I am so sure the first thing he will do is tell me

to take a class or go to the group mettings. Can anyone give me some

advice about approaching the doctor. I'ts almost embarrasing, like I

am admitting defeat. I'm afraid that i will cave or just break down.

Can anyone share a story with me?

Hi Carla!

There is a great support group that meets the first & third Friday of

each month in Santa Clara called SIPS (Support, Information, People Sharing).

Your PCP will most definitely tell you to take a class at Kaiser, and if

you can say that you've already attended some group meetings, then that will

all be in your favor. Good luck on your journey!

Hi Carla,

Well . . . I know that it could be embarassing. I was always embarassed

to discuss my weight problem with my doctor - until I decided to approach

him about WLS. Somehow, instead of feeling like I was admitting defeat,

I felt like I was finally asserting myself and seeking treatment for a disease.

Obesity is a disease - but, for most of my life, it seems that people have

treated me as though being fat was a moral disorder or character flaw. Traditional

advice about diets and so on has not worked for most folks - something like

95-98% of people who lose weight on diets regain it all and add a few pounds

in the bargain. Obviously that is not a good success rate and, with any

other disease, few medical professionals would advocate a treatment plan

with such a lousy track record. Sorry, Carla . . . I'm probably not saying

anything that you don't already know - I guess what I'm getting at is that

you shouldn't feel defeated.

When I first discussed WLS with my doctor, he did refer me to a nutritionist.

He wasn't trying to dissuade me from surgery - I just didn't have a well-documented

diet history (all my supervised attempts were outside the Kaiser system and

I didn't have good records). I was surprised that the nutritionist did not

try to talk out of having surgery - although I did end up talking myself

out of it for a time. Anyway . . . the nutritionist did not tell me to take

a class or to go to group meetings. Things may well have changed since then,

however.

When is your appointment? Please, let us know how it goes.

Take care,

Kay

Don't forget Kaiser is paid VERY WELL (~$500 to $1000/month) by you

whether it physically comes out of your pocket or your employers.

Kaiser also has a vested intrest in keeping you healthy as treating

the chronic problems associated with our disease is far greater than

the cost of the surgery. As for the embarassing aspect.... I have

had several prostate exams and my wife has had more than her share

of " up your address " exams... I might be out on limb here but I

think those are a little more degredating<sp> than bringing the

subject of baraitric surgery up at a routine office visit. Also in

talking to a couple of friends who are Kaiser Dr's. There is

actually a push on to encourage those of us who have a BMI over 45

to have the surgery.

Hi Carla,

When I decided to discuss WLS with my PCP, I kinda approached the

subject in a round-about way. I made the appointment to discuss the

effects of my obesity - I wanted to discuss my disease and let him offer

possible treatments. What I was hoping to do, was to maneuver him into

bringing up the subject of surgery - I was prepared to introduce the

subject myself if he didn't. It worked like a charm. When he sorta

hemmed and hawwed for a moment and then said, " Well, would you consider

surgery? " - I couldn't help but chuckle. I'll admit that I've had this

PCP for a long time and he has seen what the effects of the obesity have

been for me.

Starting with a new PCP might make this more of a challenge, but it

shouldn't be too much of an obstacle. Seeing the nutritionist is a good

idea, but I don't know if he/she can make the necessary referral. I'd

suggest that you make an appointment to see your PCP - I wouldn't say

that the appointment was to discuss weight, but rather to be treated for

some specific problem related to your weight. I don't know what those

problems are for you - but be prepared to let the doctor know just how

debilitating your weight is. Before I went to see my PCP, I wrote him a

letter - not to send, but to focus my thoughts - in which I described,

as clearly and fully as I could, just how my weight was impacting my

life. I took the letter with me - just in case the appointment got cut

short and we didn't have time to discuss everything. WLS is much more

common now than it was when I first discussed it with my doctor - back

then Kaiser didn't have any in-house Bariatric Programs - so maybe my

advice is very dated. (I had my surgery in December of 2003, but I

first discussed it with my doctor in the spring of 2000.)

I don't know if any of this is helpful - but, you never know . . .

Please, let us know how things go with the nutritionist and so on.

All the best,

Kay

Hi again, Dawn . . .

Well . . . I'm feeling a bit silly. I should have read more of my e-mail

before I replied to your earlier post because you answered my questions in

this one.

Wow! You've been doing great! I glad to hear that you've had no complications

and all is well.

Where did you have your surgery?

Take care,
