Hi ,

Yes, I saw that article last night on my Yahoo home page and let me tell you, I

was steamed! I started to write him a letter, but I was so angry, I knew I

shouldn't because I would have forgotten I am a lady.

As a sufferer of both Fibromyalgia and TMJ Syndrome, I wonder just how long he

would think they were psychosomatic if he had to go through what we here on this

list do for just a month or even a week? GRR!

I don't understand these doctors...I really don't. Mine are no better. I've been

told " Well, there's really no use in worrying about it because there's not much

we can do about it anyway. "

My sister also has TMJ Syndrome, as well as my mom, aunt and some of my friends.

My sister's Periodontist told me and her straight out that he believes that TMJ

is just something middle age women get who are stressed out as they approach

Menopause. She was only in her early 30's at the time and I am only 38 now. I've

had TMJ since I was a teenager and Fibro since my early 20's.

Sorry for the rant folks...it's just hard not to when I see such ignorance

coming from the medical community.

Gentle Hugs,

Jacqui

Don't get mad at the Doctor folks....I actually listened to this on

the radio yesterday...and he wasn't all high and mighty and

dismissive...the tone of his voice was quite supportive and he did

sound 'baffled' by the disease...not all of what he said is contained

in the written article....

He is saying right now it appears to be 'in the mind' because of the

lack of diagnostic tests to find it...and he is a scientist and must

go by hard evidence...

He did go on to say he is open minded...if they can find out more

about it he is willing to change his mind...after all MS was a

mystery for a long time but they now know so much more about it

because of extensive research...

I've listened to Dr. Edell for a long time...and I like his no-

nonsense approach to medicine...so I guess I felt I just had to speak

up in his behalf...all he is saying is 'right now we don't know

enough about it'...which is true.

Dr. Dean Edell: " Now fibromyalgia is puzzling. Many people who do not

have the disease cannot know that the only thing that separates

fibromyalgia from a psychosomatic disease is the little tender parts in

the back. There's 12 little spots that you push on the patient's back.

If they are very tender in these different spots, or 8 out of 12, then

you're considered to have fibromyalgia. "

I've always liked Dr. Edell's approach to most subjects, as well. But,

scientist or not, he doesn't seem to even be familiar enough with

fibromyalgia to be speaking about it. As all of us know, the tender

spots are not all on the back, and it's 11 out of 18. As is so often

the case in the medical community, he is pulling answers out of his *ss

because he doesn't actually have any. I'm not just speaking from

personal experience, here. I am also a nurse, and have seen it too

much. Hope this isn't too harsh. I have a tendency to speak my mind.

I do realize not everyone is of the same opinion, of course.

Love & Laughter,

in NY
