Guest guest
, Glad things are going well with chelation! Sounds good for starting ALA. Very sensible move to cut down your coffee, soda, and alcohol. They are all considered gastric irritants and it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference. I sure don't know what to say about the " puffiness " . I take some taurine, but not that much and don't notice any problem. I don't take acetyl-L-carnitine. If your weight is not increased, then I guess it is not significant water retention. Has the problem increased over time, or is it constant? I think taurine can cause nausea in large doses, but don't know of any other side effects. I draw a blank with acetyl-l-carnitine. Is there anything else in the slippery elm tea besides slippery elm? Another idea is that you noticed the change after starting the new supps, but maybe it's a coincidence. Perhaps some vit/min deficiency is creeping in after 8 rounds of chelation? Are you taking enough B complex, magnesium? Any urinary tract symptoms with chelation? -- > > The kids and I are on round 8. Guest guest
> > Can you explain the not doing ALA on last dose? In Andy's Hair Test book, pg. 239, he mentions that when using ALA with DMSA or DMPS, leaving the ALA out of the last dose or two of the round substantially reduces redistribution side effects for some people. I've read here that others do this, and it helps with the first day off round. So, I thought I'd try it too. in Illinois

I've noticed it in the last couple weeks, since starting the taurine. I'm not sure what the connection is. I don't think I drank so much coffee before that it could be considered a significant diuretic. 2-3 mugs in the morning. This week, I've cut back to 1 mug. > > I think taurine can cause nausea in large doses, but don't > know of any other side effects. I draw a blank with > acetyl-l-carnitine. I'm doing one teaspoon of slippery elm powder with one teaspoon sugar, two cups boiling water, and little cinnamon for flavor. It's much better tasting than I imagined! If the DGL and slippery elm tea, plus coffee/soda/alcohol reduction works to eliminate my chest pain, I'll reduce or drop the taurine and see what happens. > > Another idea is that you noticed the change after starting the > new supps, but maybe it's a coincidence. I'm wondering if the DGL might be helping to retain sodium and leading to the 'puffy' feeling. Perhaps the dose is a bit high. Guest guest
, I can't think of anything else, except just to be watchful. (Not that you need to be told.) I really hope the chest pain calms down soon, or at least that you figure out what is the best next step. I have a $2500 deductible as well, and I certainly know the reluctance to have more testing even when there is some indication for it. I don't remember your age, but a stress test or EKG when you are young might be a good baseline to have at some point. -- > > > > , > > > > Glad things are going well with chelation! Guest guest
& , Interesting about the DGL. http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/deg_0092.shtml I read the site posted, and looked it up at PDRHealth too. The chewable tablets I've been taking are from Vitamin Shoppe, 385 mg licorice extract, std. to 3 % glycyrrhizinic acid (now there's a word for a spelling bee). It doesn't seem like enough to cause water retention, but I think I'll drop the DGL and see what happens. Thanks! in Illinois

The chewable tablets I've > been taking are from Vitamin Shoppe, 385 mg licorice extract, std. to 3 % glycyrrhizinic , Whoa, I just checked their web page and that little 3% of glycyrrhizin is equal to 11 mg. Doesn't sound like much, but (1) it adds up, (2) if you happen to have high cortisol levels part of the time, a little will be enough to mess you up, and (3) I don't think a higher quality product would have that much. I use Enzymatic Therapy DGL. I question the quality of the Vitamin Shoppe product. Their label doesn't make sense. It claims there is 385 mg of extract " STD. TO 3% GLYCYRRHIZINIC ACID 11 MG " . 11% of 385 mg is more like 40mg. Yikes. I think you should definitely discontinue that product. I'll bet the puffiness will resolve fairly quickly. A few years ago, when I still had cortisol, I took a product that had a little bit of licorice extract in it (a fiber supplement). I got extremely puffy, as in big time water retention on that stuff. According to the label, the licorice was a small amount, but it had large effects. I took the Enzymatic Therapy product when I had elevated cortisol levels and did not notice a problem. -- > acid (now there's a word for a spelling bee). Guest guest
Thanks again for being a good sounding board and good researchers! I've been taking the DGL off and on in various amounts for over a month. The slippery elm tea I just started this week. As of today, I dropped the DGL. Also, I must have messed up setting the alarm on my cell phone last night and we missed the midnight dose. I had to stop the round for the kids and I. But, ALA for me next week! in Illinois
