Jeanna thanks so much for the note. My brother FINALLY got my email address correct and he let me know that they are planning to bring Zach here so I can see him as soon as Zach is able. Probably the middle of August or the beginning of September. I can't wait! He is bringing him here just for me... makes me feel kinda special, although I know he is really bringing him to see grandpa and grandma LOL Zach's mommy is doing better, she's been stressed, but she's a fighter so she'll be just fine, I am sure :D

Take care sweetie,

Your grumpy but friendly Iowan, Moo

Crystal, I hope that things get much better for Zach's mother. She will definitely be in my prayers. My mom delivered 3 premature babies and only my baby brother got to go home with her when she left the hospital, I know how heartbreaking it is for the a new mother worrying about her child but I know it must be even worse when she herself is feeling yucky, please let her know that I will pray for her and Zach. Take care of yourself so you can be the Auntie I know you will want to be and hold that baby as much as possible right after all you get to do all the spoiling you want. Moo, we are just now realizing that a traumatic birth, even if the outcome is eventually good, can cause PTSD symptoms in both the mom and family members. Probably the baby too, but how can he express it? Anyway, I have had moms, dads, grandmas & others experience flashbacks, depression, etc. For example, we had a woman a couple of years ago whose uterus turned inside out when the placenta was delivered. Usually they can be replaced without surgery, but this one wouldn't stay back. Mom was bleeding a lot, getting faint, etc. and they took her to surgery to replace it. She was fine after; went home on the second day after the birth. A couple of weeks later, she was overdoing things and got a little lightheaded. She lay down & felt better right away, but the husband called me, pretty panicky. I explained that it was common for women to do that when they were too active and if she felt fine now & wasn't bleeding, not to worry. He just wasn't satisfied, so I had him bring her in (Sunday afternoon). I met them in the clinic & she was fine, color good, blood pressure good. After talking a few minutes, he finally let it out. When she got fainty & pale, it reminded him of how she looked in the birthing room. He cried, said he thought that she was going to die, had never seen so much blood, it was worse than anything he'd seen on TV, etc. All that fear & helplessless came back to him because she got lightheaded & pale. Truthfully, I had never considered this kind of effect on the dads before, but I think about it now. When we have a birth with anything unexpected, we will sit down with the mom & family and go over the events--what happened, why, etc. I don't have any data to back it up, but I expect it will help prevent the type of flashback experience this young guy went through. So, the point of this story is that maybe someone in your family can be aware of this issue, watch for signs, encourage everyone who was involved to verbalize their perception of what happened & their emotions. Blessings to Zach and all his extended family! Rose
