Hi All-

I just want to point out that whether health care dollars are lost

through government bureaucracy (socialized medicine) or HMO

administrators (managed care), the waste of money that could be geared

towards patients is tremendous. Both systems are bad. Middlemen. Bah!

I also have to add that very few go without healthcare in the U.S.

regardless of what politicians would like us to believe (it is an

election year). My husband is required by U.S. law to treat anyone that

comes into his emergency department regardless of how minor their

complaint is (his hospital frequently treats colds). He works at an

academic institution, but the ritziest hospitals have to take all

patients too. And believe me, the uninsured know about it.

It's also a problem because insured patients now go to the doctor for

things they would never have considered going for in the past. They

feel that since they're insured, why suffer. Unfortunately, that makes

it more difficult for people to see the doctor that really need to go.

This is a multifactorial problem at the very least.

The big problem is that patients don't drive healthcare anymore, the

government (in countries with socialized medicine) or HMO's (managed

care system) do. Patient's are no longer the people that the medical

field has to please.

Take care,
