Guest guest
Hello, love Nettie Faith's name! I am a Deafblind Consultant here in Canada and work with two young CHARGERS. One of whom is VERY photosensitive. He wear sunglasses (with canopies) and a baseball cap when outside (the brim really seems to help). But those of us who work with him try to be very conscious of the environment and control it where we can. For example, if walking outside on a bright day we try to keep him in the shaded area, always give him extra time to adjust to the change in light conditions and not rush him. Indoors, white walls are terribly reflective so all walls are painted a fairly neutral tone in his home (his Mum and Dad are terrific and the absolute experts on his needs). At school we try to keep backgrounds dark and contrasting, desk top non glare and carpeting on the floor in the classroom if possible. We are very conscious of having his back to windows and the teacher is very supportive if we need to turn off alternating lights if need be, I'm sure we could also approach the school to put in less glare light bulbs if necessary but so far he seems to be coping okay. We've also started working with a slant board for paper work (remember to stay away from glossy papers), and the slant reduces the glare from overhead lights as well. These are just a couple of ideas, I'm sure any Vision Itinerant you have access to would be able to give suggestions more specific to Nettie Faith.
