Guest guest
Hi Vera, I'm hanging in there too and doing better since the Holidays are over. It was a rough time for me emotionally and all. You probably read I was in hospital and out without any dx coming around other than I looked worn out. Did get some rest between tests though and found everything in good working order. Sorry Fred is going down hill. Warren is using the wheel chair a lot especially when we go out as he can't walk long distances. At home if his bp is up he walks using (when I nag him) his walker. They did an IVP on him yesterday as the Dr. had found a trace of blood in his urine. Technician said everything went well and we'll have to wait for several days to get results. He's very tired today as I expected because anything that takes more movement, etc wears him down. I'm thinking of getting a small van just because of the wheel chair. It takes such an effort to lift it into our car's trunk even tho' its a light chair. In thinking of myself I think a van would be much easier and maybe I should think of one we could put a lift into if and when necessary. We've had such foggy mornings and cold, cold nights but nothing compared to the east coast. Good ole' Calif. Take care my dear, Re: Hi everyone > Hi Everyone: > > No! Guest guest
Hey Jeanna!!!! Don't feel too bad. I did the same thing with our AOL account. I never use it and when I went to help my mom with a new name, I could only remember my husband's password. We're both using my husband's name, but I use the cable modem most of the time. It would happen just when my girlfriend who come over once a years brings back my laptop with a modem card that works. Anyway, sweetie, I hope all is well with you. I had a bad morning, but for the most part the Remicade is working very, very well! I hope everyone gets to try it? I was sooooooooo sick before I started it and now I feel like I did before the sarc spread from my brain to the other parts of my body. I really, really wish this for you and all of our friends here! Guest guest
Hi Jeanna, Glad to see that you are back on earth. So sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you are feeling well again. Ann Hi Everyone Hi, I will bet everyone thought I dropped off the earth or jumped off one well not yet. To make things short and sweet and not too boring. I got my new shunt was on my third week post op and my skin starting flaking off or I don't know what the medical term might be it just wasn't covering the shunt anymore and the the tubing in my head was exposed, Neuro like to have had a stroke I think went to emergency surgery to remove shunt that was exposed and to ICU for seven days of high dose vancomycin, then put new shunt in, stayed more days in hospital oh yea, and was sent home with iv antibotics for seven days and will see neuro in two weeks and he said the old stitches from infected side will rust before he takes them out. Since we had to completely revise the thing I also have a nice new belly scar there goes the midrifs, ha. Well enough about me, how have all of you being doing I tried to read the email but unfortunately my vision has not completely cleared. Guest guest
DEAR SWEET JEANNA, I'm glad you are able to get the shunt taken care of. You deserve the best of care after all you have been through. I only pray that they always maintained your pride and humility. I find that in the emergency room and the ICU that the docs talk over you (nurses too) as if you are not in the room. I pray this should never happen to you. You are too great a person. Guest guest
Jeff, I've had evoked potentials; can't remember much about it, but it wasn't painful. Guest guest
Jeff, There are 3 evoked potential tests. I have had all 3 done, the visual twice. It is no big deal, they put electrodes on your head and you look at a screen. No pain at all. The other two I don't remember as much about. I know one is to check the brainstem and if I recall right you put on headphones. The other, I think is to check periphial(sp) nerves. It was MILDLY unpleasant. Nothing to freak out about. They ran a current over nerves in my arms and legs, there was only one spot on one ankle where it hurt, so it might not bother you at all. Hope I helped some and good luck. It is great to be able to talk with folks who have also gone through the Kaiser system. I'm sure that your psych eval went great. So what is next on your hurdle on this path? Kaiser has a bunch of them - but just keep jumping them and you will get there. Guest guest
I was just scoping out the groups, looking for one that deals with weight issues and is supportive. I am overweight and in serious need of something drastic. I have Kaiser insurance thru my husband's employment. I have attended the orientation at Kaiser for this bariatric surgery, but as far as I know they will only let you go on to the next step if you have proof of six months of weight loss efforts (ie Craig, weight watchers, etc). I have no proof. I have been doing pretty well on the slim fast thing. I am facing my 15th surgical proceedure next week. I have to have my knee fixed. I am currently involved in a workman's comp issue, having had two neck surgeries after a fall onto my back on a concrete floor at work four years ago. I live in San Diego, have four adult kids in Denver and am an animal lover. I just turned 47 and have been battling depression and chronic pain for quite sometime. I have been contemplating this surgery for some time and am not sure if I really want it or not. That is part of the reason I am here. Okay, I guess that is that for the intro. I belong to one yahoo group and have been with it for almost 2 and a half years. I have fibromyalgia and I found that group the same way I found this one. I try to stay busy so I don't lose my mind. Guest guest
Hi Michele, Welcome aboard! I hope that you find this group to be as helpful and supportive as I have. Each Kaiser program seems to be a bit different, so I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the program you are looking into - however when I first looked into WLS up here in Northern California (my pcp is in Union City) I was told that I did have to have 6-months of a supervised weight-loss program. I didn't have one in recent history and so ended up working with a nutritionist for 6 months. I lost about 75 lb. that way, but then I got a little too sure of myself and decided that I could lose the weight without surgery. Well . . . like most folks who lose weight on diets, I didn't keep it off. I had gained back most of what I lost when I called my pcp and told him I wanted to go ahead with WLS. Luckily, things progressed fairly quickly once he referred me. If you are doing well with SlimFast, that is great! However, to hedge your bets you might want to see about working with a nutritionist or some such through Kaiser just so you have that on record should you decide to further pursue WLS. You have certainly had to deal with a lot of surgeries and I can see why you might not want to have another one, but it does seem like it would be a good idea to keep it as an option. You mentioned that you are "overweight and in serious need of something drastic" - well . . . that certainly describes a lot of us here. If you don't mind my asking . . . just how overweight are you? Do you know your BMI? If I am being too forward with these questions, please forgive me and ignore them. When I started I wasn't just overweight, I was "super morbidly obese" with a BMI of 70.9 - yikes! - I am happy to say that I am now 114 lb. lighter than I was then (BMI now 49.3)- 78 lb. of that loss is since my surgery last December. BTW I am 54 years old and clinical depression and chronic pain have been two of the most limiting factors in my life for over 25 years. Just thought I'd mention that so you know that we have something in common. I look forward to getting to know you. Please, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.. There are lots of folks here with a vast amount of experience - I'm sure that we'd be happy to provide as much info as we can. Guest guest
Thank you Shanna, and all that responded to my post. As far as the " proof " goes, I went to Clairmont Mesa, which is in San Diego and during the orientation class for the pre surgical information we were told that we have to have documentation showing at least 6 months of weight loss attempts. They said it would be things like weight watchers or Craig where you had paperwork to show you had actually did the six month program requirements. I went to see my knee surgeon last Friday. He examined me and then asked me if I had ever been told I had a heart murmur. I was surprised. I told him no. He said it won't affect my surgery this Friday. When I got home, I called Kaiser and am trying to make an appointment with my GP to follow up on this heart thing. To me that is one more qualifying health issue to make me a candidate for this surgery. Afterwards, I called the positive choice people and inquired about the nutrition classes they offer. I was told that these classes are a half hour long and they do count as " proof " of attending a 6 month pre surgical program. Now I am wondering if Kaiser has different requirements for different states or what is happening. I am going to attend my first nutrition class tomorrow. I had some stuff I should not have had yesterday when I went to this ferret meeting, but I didn't go overboard and I am back on track with the slim fast thing again today. Thank you all for all the information I have available to me here in this group. I feel very fortunate to have found all of you. This gives me hope, and sometimes hope is all I have left. I have learned this from having to deal with workman's comp. Have a great night and I hope everyone sleeps well! Guest guest
---Hi I go thru that constantly...not losing for a few days up to a week and then drop 5 pounds quickly. You are doing great already...just take it one day at a time. In gastric-bypass-support-kaiser-patients , " " <marlene@g...> wrote: > I have had my first apt. with Dr. Baggs. Guest guest
Hi , It sounds like you have lost your weight quicker than I did. I am also 53 and it took me 2 months to lose 24 lbs. I had lost 6 before I saw Dr. Baggs. The days that I did best were the days I had a protein shake for breakfast and dinner. Had protein and salad for lunch and got all my water in that day. I know Richmond is against protein shakes after surgery, but Dr. Baggs said it didn't matter to him before surgery. I would go 2 weeks sometimes with no loss and then I would lose 2 or 3 lbs. I am now just trying to maintain my loss to get to my surgery date, June 28th. Carol wrote: I have had my first apt. with Dr. Baggs. Done the EKG, chest xray, and blood work. I've also been keeping my calories between 1,200 and 1,000 per day and walking. I'm 53 years old and in the middle of the big change. Has anyone out there had this problem? Or does anyone have any sugestions??? Thanks,
