Hi ,

Avocados do have some protein - but not much. According to FitDay,

2 ounces of avocado have 1 gram of protein, 3 grams of carbs, 6 grams of

fat and 59 calories.

I'm not sure what counts as "bad fat" - I'm not worrying about fat at

this stage of the game. I concentrate on getting protein - and I

try to keep the "cost" of a gram of protein to about 10 calories or less.

Doing that kinda eliminates the chance of getting too much fat.

You are more adventurous than I was at 3 weeks out. What does

your bariatric program suggest for your stage of eating? (I don't

remember where you had surgery.) Have you tried scrambled eggs yet?

I didn't do a lot of cooking for quite a while after surgery, but one

of my favorites was home-made split pea soup. I just used the recipe

on the package of split peas. Yummy. I do add some Any Whey

protein powder to my servings - it is pretty much tasteless and one ounce

of the powder adds 4 grams of protein for only 18 calories.

I look forward to seeing what sort of recipes folks come up with.

All the best,

Kay

Hi all,

I'm 3 weeks out and tired of eating my food individually. I have

eaten refried beans and cheese together and added some smashed

avacado...yummy. Are avacados protien? I know they are fat...but

does "natural" fat count as "bad fat?"

Does anyone have recipes I can make that me AND my family can eat?

Or just something that I can eat? Or am I to eat my food seperatly

for longer more?

I haven't had a problem with ANY food that I have tried so far.

Thanks,

~

When I started cooking for my family after surgery, I made foods that

we could all eat. The change in lifestyle not only needed to affect

me. As I learned about being healthier, I wanted them to be

healthier too. I focused on protein and veggies and some carbs. I

bought and used the Foreman grill alot. Chicken, hamburger,

fish all served with salad and some sort of potato or pasta. I have

to avoid rice and my family is not too keen on that anyway, so that

was easy. I never really worried about fats and calories since I was

eating so little so I used sauces and gravies to add flavor.

I also used the crockpot alot. It was so easy to throw in meat and

veggies in the morning and come home to a hot meal. I go to

foodtv.com for recipes and then just modify them. I just made a

great homemade chicken noodle soup. There was alot so we ate it for

2 days and then I froze the leftovers for another meal. Another

thing I do is make enough for dinner so that I have lunch the next

day.

Using the Foreman grill was easy and food cooks fast. Chicken breast

is done in about 5 minutes. Then I usually brush some barbecue sauce

on it and serve with salad and baked potato. I also like burgers on

the grill. I mix the meat with some onion soup mix and make

patties. The are done in a few minutes then I melt some cheese on

them for great cheeseburgers. Again, some salad and some roasted

potatoes and boom--great dinner. I roast the little baby red

potatoes in the oven. Again, I use the onion soup mix and mix with a

little olive oil and roast for about 40 min in a hot oven. The

recipe is on the box.

My goal was to keep it simple. Good, tasty food cooked in a healthy

way. Definitely time to use your imagination. I would also make

dessert for us all. I would mix up some sugar free pudding or jello

and put a dollop of fat free Cool Whip on it and we all have that.

Tasty treat and small amount of sugar and calories.

Hope that helps.

Hugs,

Pat B.

My mom is a chef and my family has owned restaurants in the bay area for years (since before I was born!) ... and she's writing a cook book for gastric bypass patients. I'll be sure to let you guys know when it's out!
