Pete (and everybody else too)

I don't know if this will work for anyone else but me,

but when I get a craving for something I can't have,

or when I have the munchies, I grab my jar of Dukes

and eat a few big spoonfuls, and the cravings go away!

Greetings all --

An odd twist to my Mayo visit. I went today and found out I need to go back

TOMORROW as well! Today I saw the endo and optha. The endo did a physical, had

me drink the radioactive stuff for the uptake test; the optha did a ct scan of

my eyes and an exam. The optha was running two hours late and our session was

rushed. Tomorrow I have 45 minutes with the endocronlogist to discuss

treatment options and results of my uptake, blood tests. The antibody tests

won't be in for a week or so. Tomorrow I go back to have the 24 hour uptake

read and my consult with the endocronlogist.

I've read what everyone's just been posting on Hashimotos and Graves -- as some

of you may know, my endo here has told me I have Hashimotos antibodies. So for

me, I will ask the endo about the prevelance of BOTH antibodies in Graves

patients and what this means for treatment. As has been mentioned, (by elaine,

I think) I would assume that the Hashimotos and Graves would mean there's a

greater chance of my thyroid swinging to hypo without treatment. I have a

couple of antibody questions and view these as among the most important. I've

highlighted ten of my 24 questions as vital and will hope for the best on the

rest.

The endocronlogist was also very interested in my breast health. I just weaned

my daughter so my breasts still have milk and are wildly lumpy with swollen milk

glands, etc. He did do a breast exam but said he couldn't tell a thing and

recommended a mammogram in a few weeks (I'm 36 and have already had one

mammogram). Tomorrow, along with the antibody questions, I plan to ask him

about the link between breast cancer and thyroid disease. The naturopath I saw

a couple of weeks ago stated that in her opinion, the link is clear. She said

without question thyroid problems put women at a higher risk for breast cancer.

I will also ask if have both HT and GD antibodies would put one at even a higher

risk for breast cancer.

I asked the opthalmologist about the antibodies. He said that he couldn't give

me a clear answer. My question was something like this " do the antibodies that

work against the thyroid also trigger immune responses against the eyes, or are

there separate eye antibodies, and if so, how do they work? " He said he just

didn't know FOR SURE and that is THE key area of researh currently. He said

that he might've given me one answer a year ago and a different one last week.

There's a woman at Mayo spending 50% of her time in the lab on this question and

he anticipates an answer soon, coming from her. He said the understanding of

the relationship between the different kinds of antibodies and how they affect

the eyes is currently in flux. I was a bit disapointed that I didn't get a

better answer, but felt there wasn't enough time to press him on this. I don't

think he expected these questions as he was revving up for his basic " here's how

Graves disease works " session and not the drilling I had in mind :)

I asked the opth (Dr. Garrity) about the " hot phase " and how long it runs. He

said, two years minimum and sometimes as long as five. But definitely two years

as the optimistic call. I also asked him about subtotal and total

thyroidectomies and their effect on the eyes. His answer was interesting and

disturbing. Theoretically, he said, either surgical procedure can be viewed as

the " best " route for the eyes and the most effective at eliminating the rather

evasive antibody problem. That said, he also told me that the WORST eye cases

he's seen were in people who've had surgery. SO, in theory, the literature and

other people say surgery is helpful for the eyes and in practice, he's seen this

to be true but also seen the worst cases ever emerge after surgery.

On pregnancy, he said that his experience has shown pregnancy to greatly

increase eye involvement. His exact words were " the eyes can go crazy. "

I will look at my notes and see what else we covered and post tomorrow, along

with information from the endocronologist. Today's endo visit was really about

taking a history and physical. He did say that my numerous swollen lymph nodes

were often seen in Graves disease and not to worry. While waiting for the

uptake and bloodwork, he also said that it was obvious that I do indeed have

Graves, without a doubt. My eyes and physical exam were definitive for him.

More " he saids " . He said that " Graves is an unpredictable illness, particularly

those cases developed post-partum. " He went on to suggest that post-partum

Graves patients have among the highest chances of spontaneous remission and

since my BP and pulse were " low enough that the metropolitan insurance tables

say you'll live forever " he's interested to see if there's been an improvement

in my condition. Again, tomorrow I will have a chance to ask my more detailed

questions. I too am especially interested in the HT and GD combination and

breast cancer link.

Finally, the state of my eyes. Basically, my left eye although swollen and dry,

is in wonderful shape with low pressure and I can't remember the name but the

number that measures the bulginess of it all is 20. The right eye has some

corneal damage due to dryness and KL something ? (he wrote it down and I get a

copy but don't have it yet) on the upper part of the whites -- a type of

conjunctivitis caused by the dryness and irritation. He said my lid

lag/retraction on the right is about as bad as it gets. That said, he also told

me that the lid retraction is the symptoms that also has the GREATEST

possibility of improving spontaneously. His recommendation: wait one year and

if it's not improved, have lid surgery. In the meantime, continue taping,

lubing etc. and get in to see someone immediately if doublevision or any new

symptoms develop. I forgot to ask him if eye exercises were helpful, but he did

say that all the problems are caused by muscles tightening. It would follow (at

least I think) that eye exercises would be helpful. On a spectrum, my eye

disease at the moment is not mild and they are no way near the 5% worst case

scenarios. He reminded me that this is no guarantee that things won't go

downhill the next year -- or improve for that matter.

Well, that's the news from Mayo so far. The endo was a little taken aback by

all the herbs I was taking and worried that they would render the uptake

invalid, if they had iodine. I don't think they do. He seemed quite surprised

that I was seeing a naturopath and again, this is something I suppose we'll

touch on tomorrow. Both docs, while busy, were extraordinarily kind.

More tomorrow night. I'm exhausted and on my way to bed . . . we had to get up

at 5 am to be there by 7:30, but tomorrow's trip will be much more leisurely

since my appointment is for 11:30. I'm wildly curious to see if there have been

improvements in my levels (I feel so much better) but am planning to stay the

naturopathic course for quite some time, regardless. More tomorrow,
