Hi again

About Walking... When Mom walks with the walker with PT assisting

her it is seldom she puts her heal down. It helps if she takes large

steps and the Pt assistant keep encouragening her. But as soon as

someone passing by says 'Mable your doing great' or something to that

effect, she looses her concentration and her balance. Mom told me

while she is walking she silently says to herself, Right, Left, Right

Left..like she is marching. Also she keeps her knees bent while

walking, which makes her stiff all over. When she is finnished

walking she is exasusted. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how

to get her to walk straight. Where the knee with straighten out and

the heal firmly place on the floor??

Thanks...for all your input...

Ann

Greetings Ann!

I noted your comment about your mother:

I suspect, this is just a case of the brain 'unlearning' how to walk. When

my ataxia gets very bad, I also find myself walking that way. It takes

conscious effort to walk properly. Best way to overcome this is to continue

to practice. Attempt frequent short walks, not long walks. That does the

best at helping maintain capabilities.

Anyway, that's my own experience, for what it's worth.

Hi

Your input is worth a lot. Mom seems to want to impress everyone including

herself in the distance she walks. But I will explain to her how the brain

has forgotten how to walk. And that many short walks are better than one

long walk. Explain 'ataxia' to me.

Thank you very much. Ann from MN

Greetings Ann!

You wondered:

Ataxia means 'incoordination'. This can be caused by any number of

factors - drugs such as alcohol, a stroke, and neurodegenerative disorders

(MS, MSA, etc).

So, when someone with MSA walks like a drunk, it is a sign of incoordination

(ataxia). For me, when this is worse, other symptoms are also bad.

,

You mean you don't have an empty pint in your back pocket :o) I can't accuse

Charlotte of that because she never drank, even a beer.

Sorry, I don't have Anne to pick on right now. She is still not up to par and

her dad is still having problems. Several Aussies having problems as summer

approaches there.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte

Shhh... Don't tell anyone ... I keep the hip flask in my vest pocket ... and

my vest flask in my hip pocket. That way no one can find either! ;-)

Well! I feel honored! I'll try to do the best job I can filling those big

shoes ... No, wait! Don't pull out that wet noodle! I was just speaking

metaphorically! Really!

Hope she (and others) get feeling better soon. Just shows that any stress

can make things worse ... even the heat of summer.
