Guest guest
The link given doesn't work so I went searching and found this one: http://www.eastwest-mn.com/East-West_Clinic.html I'd be interested to hear what Dr. Hallett at NIH thinks about the acupuncture treatment's effects on blood pressure especially. Seems to me I've heard of others trying it before but never with these results. Guest guest
Marilyn, Remember that not everyone on the internet is truthful. There are several people claiming to be able to help you with things like water therapy - which we have already told you will help (get 6-8 cups a day depending on your weight). You also know that your husband should get range of motion exercise every day. When someone claims a human went from no movement to full movement in one session by sticking 60-90 needles in them - to me that means one of two things: 1. the person was not sick to begin with and it was only in their mind, or the person was dehydrated and got relief from a lot of water (possibly boullion), which we know will raise the BP and allow you to walk better. 2. It's a con. You notice she said that the man went (after the treatment) and got the dx of MSA. That's bull - you only get a dx of MSA from your symptoms, therefore if you have no symptoms, how do you get a dx of MSA. There is no magic test for MSA either, it often takes up to five years to diagnose. If things like this actually worked we would all be on our way. Last year there was one about a doctor in south Chicago, who had " letter's " from an astronaut saying the man had healed him. If you called the doctor who had written the letter's - he was no longer listed in the phone book. You CAN NOT believe everything you read on the internet and especially in email - remember the little girl missing a few days ago. People had even changed the date from Oct, 1999 to Oct, 2000. Always remember to check things out that we tell you with your doctor, or at least several of us. When you see the same answer from a couple of people here on the list, you can be somewhat sure it has worked for us. We have seen a couple of people who have tried acupuncture say it worked somewhat for pain, but I have never seen where they got up and walked after one visit. We had a man here who promised a herbal cure for cancer and had hundreds of patients getting shots of aloe verde into their veins. Evidently it gives you a temporary high and makes you feel better, UNTIL it kills you. He even had a doctor's license, which has been removed after he killed two people in a short period of time in his office. But he was getting them for big bucks for each " treatment " . Beware too, as they often have a " come on " price which is very low ($50 or so) then the next " treatment is $1000 or more. The last patient that went to the doctor here had evidently paid him over $30,000 for " treatments " over a two year period (and still had cancer). Stick to a movement disorder specialist and the medical doctor you have known for years with a license. Ask them about miracle cures. Also know exactly what " herbs and natural substances " they are using, as some herbs and natural substances can harm a well person and kill a MSA patient. Guest guest
Bill and Charlotte, What are range of motion exercises. My husband was told to do Tai chi, which he does once a week for 1 1/2 hours, also he goes to the gym 4 times a week and walks the tread mill for about 20 min, rides the stationary bike for 15min. and does some weight lifting (5LBS). Does this sound suffiecient. His biggest problem is his balance, and lightheadedness on standing. Basically he`s trying to build strenght and endurence. Guest guest
GFKN, I'm sure Tai chi incorporates range of motion exercise. I have seen articles on Parkinson's and Tai chi helping there, so it is also good for MSA. Basically, range of motion exercises are the one's used to loosen atheletes up and stretch before they participate in sports. They are also used for arthritis patients. It sounds as if he is doing great right now. The problem comes if he can not stand or walk at a later date. Then he will have to adapt to the loss of balance or low blood pressure (lightheadedless) if he gets them. If he has a loss of balance, he should use a wheelchair to prevent falling and still have movement. Many of the exercises can be done while in a wheelchair. At that point, he will have to exercise just to maintain movement. MSA wants to draw the body up into the fetal position, so you have to stretch your muscles daily to keep movement. The same holds true with speech and swallowing. There are a list of exercises for speech on the Links portion of the egroups webpage (I think). Now, while he has movement is the time to start working on those exercises also. It is important to work on volume and breathing as well as making the distinct sounds. All of this can help you maintain years of movement and speech. I have seen estimates of two additional years or more by doing this daily. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Greetings GFKN and Bill ! One caveat to Bill's note: > I'm sure Tai chi incorporates range of motion exercise. > I have seen articles on Parkinson's and Tai chi helping > there, so it is also good for MSA. Unfortunately, I discovered that if you have the OPCA form of MSA, Tai Chi is too difficult for me. You might ask the instructor if you can audit a course before paying for the full course. Fortunately for me the course was offered by our local town, so the price was lower than normal. But DO try. It is very graceful and peaceful. I could do each of the figures ... sort of ... but putting the pieces together was beyond me. It shouldn't be surprising since I now find doing too many things at once is much harder than two years ago. Oh well, let's me focus better. Regards, =jbf= B. Guest guest
I could not agree with you more. I have two sons who have some involvement in the medical profession. They remind me daily that you should take much of what you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Even so, I am like everyone else who is looking for a way to relieve this burden.
