Guest guest
Hi Jena, In regard to pickles I think that only being three weeks out it is a little too soon to be trying someting like pickles. I would really hold off on something that is really pretty hard to digest. Remember your stomach is still new on the inside and you need to be careful what you eat. I know there are so many things that you once eat in the past that are so tempting but you have to be careful until you are fully healed on the inside. For now just take baby steps time will come soon enough when you can eat other things. Just concentrate on your protein and give your body time to heal. Ramona 1/13/2003 357/213/? Guest guest
Nobody ever told me anything specific about pickes, but I started eating them around 3 months out - when I was approved to eat salad (PB guidelines at the time). I've never had a problem eating them. I'm not sure how far out you are, but when I was very early post-op, I'd add a bit of pickle juice to my tuna & reduced-fat mayo. It really satisfied the craving for me. Good luck! Hugs, Jen jena_mcdowell wrote: Hey, Does anyone know when I can try to eat Pickles??? I am dying for a pickle!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Hi Jena, How far out are you? Are we talking sweet or sour pickles? My general attitude (which has admittedly gotten me in trouble on occasion) is to try a little bit and see what happens, if you're talking dill pickles. I would advise just eating the inside, since the skin can be kinda tough and I'd worry about it getting stuck in the stoma. If you're talking sweet pickles, I know there is a brand of sugar-free bread and butter pickles, but I don't remember details for sure. Hold on a moment, let me see if I can find them. Okay, try going to http://www.deepdiscountnutrition.com/mtolnosugadb.html. Hope I didn't keep you waiting TOO long! ;-) jena_mcdowell wrote: > Hey, > > Does anyone know when I can try to eat Pickles??? Guest guest
Hi there, Your mentioning the concentration on protein brought up a question I've been meaning to ask. How much protein should we be getting each day? I've tried looking this up on the web and found a wide variety of answers. The most common statement seems to be that we should be getting 1 gram of protein for each kilogram of our weight (or ideal weight, depending on who is giving the info). This seems impossibly high. Guest guest
Try a small bite and see how you do. If you can tolerate them, eat pickles in moderation. Remember your main focus should be protein. Pickles??? Hey, Does anyone know when I can try to eat Pickles??? I am dying for a pickle!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Here’s the formula for how much protein you should be taking in each day: Because of the way our new insides are arranged, it is very important to get in the proper amount of protein every day. Taking in enough protein helps with muscle, tissue and nerve development and helps you lose weight. Do you know how much protein you are supposed to have each day? Below is a formula to figure out how many grams of protein you should have each day. Protein should come from meats, fish, cheeses and other fermented dairy products. If you cannot get in enough protein from food, you can supplement with a low calorie, low carbohydrate protein supplement. · Start with the base number of 105. · Add 5 to the base number for every inch over 5 feet. · Add 10% of that total if you have a large frame or 5% if you have a medium frame. · Divide that number by 2.2. · Multiply that number by 0.9 to get the total number of grams of protein you should be taking in each day. Here’s an example for a 5’8” medium framed individual: 105 +40 (8x5=40) 145 + 7.25 (5% of 145 is 7.25) 152.25 ¸ 2.2 69.2 x 0.9 62.3 grams of protein each day Re: Re: Pickles??? Guest guest
Pat, Would you please tell me where you got this information? It certainly looks like it's from a WLS "handbook" of some type. However, according to those caclulations, I should only be getting 45 - 47.25 grams of protein per day!! (I put the range because I've always been told that I have a large frame, but now that the weight is coming off, it's looking more like a medium build.) This isn't such a bad thing, but I do know that too much protein can cause people to gain weight and I'm wondering if I might be hindering my weight loss by striving for 65+ grams per day. Thanks! Guest guest
I got it from a nurse who has had the surgery. I am not sure where she got it but I have been using this formula for two years and have had no trouble. That number seems low to me. Are you sure you figured the formula correctly? How tall are you? Guest guest
I’m going to assume you are medium framed: 105 + 5 = 110 + 5.5 (5%) = 115.5 * 2.2 = 52.5 x 0.9 = 47 grams of protein a day. Yes the number is low but you are a small person (believe it or not!). You should be taking in at least 47 grams of protein every day, more won’t hurt you as long as your calorie intake is proportionate. Re: Re: Pickles??? Pat, I am 5'1. Guest guest
Yes, I have the same concerns. I'm 5' even, and just on the safe side, we'll say a large frame: 105 + 0 = 105 105 X 10% = 115.5 115.5 / 2.2 = 52.5 52.5 X 0.9 = 47.25 47.25 grams protein per day.
