Suzanne,

I see methotrexate, which is primarity a cancer fighting med, but sometimes used

for arthritis or psoriasis.

However, it has some severe side effects and they should be fully explaned to

you before you go on it. It seems

to be a chemo drug. See it here:

I work in the Mental Health Department for my county. I work closely with

Doctors (Psychiatrists) and Nurses. When I was recently sharing of my father's

diagnosis of MSA with one of my co-workers, they asked if the mentioned

medication had been tried.

Although the person giving this suggestion knows nothing of MSA, they mentioned

that this medication has shown to be helpful in slowing down the progression of

other auto immune diseases, some being neurodegenerative. As I haven't heard of

this medication before through this list or in my father's care, I just thought

I would see if others had heard anything.

I agree and have read and found the same information. This is the reason why I

wondered if others had heard of it being used for the treatment of MSA - as it

didn't seem to be a match. I (nor my father who is dx) have been prescribed its

use. Thanks for your reply!

Suzanne,

I took methotrexate as one of the three chemotherapy drugs with

CMF chemotherapy for breast cancer. I do not know what else it is used for

but bet others on this line do.

That's very interesting, Suzanne! Just wanted to share (might as well share

with the group...) that at your Dad's Neurology appointment this a.m., Dr.

Rosenfeld said that he sees improvement in Dad's eye tracking! (couldn't really

follow the doc's finger last time as he moved it horizontally). Ill tell you,

any good news is welcome! To balance out the appointment, however, we were then

sent to X-ray, as Dad's hip has been hurting somewhat from a recent fall (not

broken or he couldn't walk, but could be bruised.) Things must be o.k. because

the doctor hasn't called - and we leave on vacation tonight, so I don't want any

bad news!!!

Could it have been misspelled and should have been " Methotrexate " which is

Hi Stacie,

I was on Imuran for a couple of months, but for me, it sent my liver enzymes up and the MD took me off it. It wasn't until I weaned off over a weeks time, that I realized just how much the inflammation thru out my system had decreased with it. (The rebound wasn't much fun.)

I say if you can tolerate it--and honestly, I didn't have much in the way of side-effects, then it could be a very good medication to help with the systemic inflammation.

As far as weight gain with it-- I didn't gain weight while I was on it, but I have put on 20 extra pounds from my Effexor XR. I guess it's one of those trade-offs- clinical depression, or obesity. Such a deal.

Hope this has helped,

Tracie

Hi Stacie, here is a little what I found on Imuran, I did not see weight gain as one of the side effects...

Love to you,

GENERIC NAME: azathioprine

BRAND NAME: Imuran

DRUG CLASS: Azathioprine is classified as an immunosuppressant medication. Azathioprine is used to suppress the immune system in patients who have had kidney transplants. Although its exact mechanism of action in rheumatoid arthritis is not known, its effect in suppressing the immune system appears to decrease the activity of this illness.

PRESCRIPTION: yes

GENERIC AVAILABLE: yes

PREPARATIONS: Tablet: 50mg; It can also be given intravenously.

STORAGE: Store at 59 to 77degrees F, in a sealed, light-resistant, container, avoid moisture.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Azathioprine is used to inhibit the immune response that causes rejection of kidney transplants. Azathioprine is also used for the treatment of severe, active rheumatoid arthritis. It is considered a "second-line," or "slow- acting" drug and is usually reserved for rheumatoid arthritis patients who do not respond to other first-line or second-line medications.

DOSING: Should be taken with food.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Azathioprine can cause an increase in cancer risk when used long-term. This particular risk increases in patients with a prior history of treatment with other powerful immunosuppressants, such as Cytoxan, Leukeran, and Alkeran. It also increases the risk of serious infections. Azathioprine can impair fertility by reducing sperm counts in males. Because azathioprine's toxicity increases when taken with the gout medication allopurinol (Zyloprim), its dose is reduced with simultaneous use. Severely low white blood counts can occur when taken with other drugs that can affect the bone marrow or with ACE-inhibitor class drugs used to treat elevated blood pressure, such as Accupril and Vasotec. The safety and effectiveness for use in children has not been established.

PREGNANCY: Azathioprine is transferred to the fetus and is avoided in pregnancy.

NURSING MOTHERS: It is also found in breast milk and is not used in nursing mothers.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common serious side effects of azathioprine involve the blood elements and gastrointestinal system. Azathioprine can cause serious lowering of the white blood cell count, resulting in an increased risk of infections. This can reverse when the dose is reduced or temporarily discontinued. Azathioprine can cause nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, which can resolve when the dose is reduced or divided through the day. Azathioprine can also cause liver toxicity (in less than 1% of rheumatoid arthritis patients). All patients taking azathioprine require regular blood testing for blood counts and liver function tests for monitoring. Other side effects encountered less frequently include fatigue, hair loss, joint pains, and diarrhea.

Hi everyone:I have a question...is anyone currently taking or has anyone taken Imuran?...if so, can you give me some feedback on how it helped/didnt help you....and the side effects you had with the medication. Also, I am about to start prednisone for the first time next week. My rheum said about 20 mg. is this a definite guarantee for a nice amount of weight gain??...and if you watch what you eat do you still gain, or is the gain mostly b/c of the binge eating?...I am concerned about this b/c I am reading that people put on like 50 pounds with prednisone and I am a small person. Stacie, I am 5'9" and weighed about 150 when I got married in 1973. My weight crept up over the years to about 200-210, where it stayed for several years. Then I had a sudden onset of fatigue, weight loss (no nausea; just too tired to eat) and other weird symptoms, which I believe was systemic sarc. I had already experienced bilateral hearing loss and a facial palsy the year before, which were attributed to viruses. I lost 35# in about 10 weeks, stayed at that weight for about a year. Then I started Prednisone, first 40mg every other day (by this time I had pulmonary sarc & my lung guy ordered the Pred). I gained a little weight, maybe 10#. About 10 months later, I saw Dr. Stern in Atlanta for the second time & he reviewed my latest brain MRI, wasn't happy with it and said that for NS, I needed 40mg every day, which I started 2/02. I started a slow, steady weight gain over several months, up to about 200 again. I still was easily exhausted, so it was difficult to exercise, plus my legs ache all the time & worse with walking. But, the big jump came after I started Remeron for tremors. It did wonders for the tremors, but I gained about 40# in 2 months. My neuro increased the dosage, because for some strange reason, Remeron is more likely to cause weight gain at lower doses. I have lost 6# in 3 weeks, which is at least a start. Exercise is still very difficult; yesterday I went to the gym; did 10 min. on a stationary bike and 4 laps in the pool. I'm still recovering from that today. If you can exercise even a little, I think it will help with the weight gain. Good luck. Rose in Indiana

I am on both Imuran and Prednisone along with Methotrrexate.

Imuran is now taking 75mg a day. NO side affects from that one.

Prednisone, you can be as careful with your eating as you can, you will still

ain weight. You also have to be concerned with Prednisone induced Diabetes.

Very hard to escape the Prednisone bloating.

Hi Stacie,

First of all, let me say that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! But for me,

the prednisone caused me to swell and gain 60 lbs in just two months

(and like you, I am normally very small or skinny, whatever - I am

5'6 " and always weighed about 120). The Doctors told me to quit

eating so much but I did NOT eat hardly at all! The pred made me so

nauseated that I could not eat. I have no idea where the weight

came from but I still have it and I have been off pred since 2 1/2

years ago....I have tried and tried to lose it but cannot. That is

all I can tell you about it.......I know some say that as soon as

they quit the pred, the weight goes off, but not for me.

Good luck and hang in there......we are here for you.

Hugs,

Darlene

Tracie,

I figured out my problem. I have to time out my pills so they are taken 12

hours apart. I took a dose at 10:00 last night, and when I awoke at 5:00

it was just my usual athritis pain -- I just take 20mg of vioxx and go back

to sleep. Then I didn't have to take more methadone until a few minutes

ago. The pain doc was adament that I not take the pills until after the

pain has started. That's different from most of the pain meds I've taken

orally.

I am hoping this is a nice Sunday for you. I am insane and am having most

of the Kelty clan (parents-in-law, to of my husbands' brothers and one sister

and amongst them ten children 8 and under!!!!!) At least Hayden is home ==

he mowed the lawn earlier and is raking. I just made the worst devilled

eggs, but mother was insistant that I use the recipe off the internet. Puke!!!!!

Wish me well. The next feat is to sautee a bunch of veggies from our large

garden (we already have too many zucchini) and to just plop two large cans

of Bush's baked beans into a pan and heat them up (thank God we've come beyond

brown sugar and mustard to snap them up.

Well, gotta go rest so I can exhaust myself!!
