Guest guest
Vera: Bob is on Mirapex. Whenever the dose is changed we do it very slowly - even cutting pills in half. He has increased Mirapex lately just a small half dose. Last Fall he decreased Mirapex but we did it very slowly - just a half a pill at a time over a period of a few weeks. He now takes .375 mg of Mirapex 3 times a day. At one time he was on .5 mg of Mirapex plus all his other meds. Slowly is the by-word of his Neurologist. Guest guest
Vera, It is my understanding that you should come off all drugs slowly. Even my vet makes me do this with the dogs! Guest guest
Vera, YES, YES, YES, Mirapex should be stoped gradually (see below from the drug info). Generally ANY medicine that you start slowly should be weaned slowly. The decision to stop taking the drug should be made in consultation with your doctor. Do not stop taking pramipexole suddenly; it is recommended that the dose be reduced gradually over a period of at least 1 week, according to your doctors instructions. Talk to your doctor. Guest guest
Vera, I just reviewed the entire FDA package insert for Mirapex. I found that it is a drug to assist sleep, very short acting, and is indicated for helping one get to sleep. Because of its short half life (1/2 hour) it is not likely that taking him off the drug abruptly caused the muscle spasms. There was one comment about myalgia (muscle pain) in the pre approval literature. This happened to about 6% of the patients. The significance of this I think, one never has myalgia without some muscle spasm. This drug is also sold under the name " Sonata " . The problem probably not caused by the abrupt cessation of the drug but can not be completely ruled out. By the way the usual dose is 5mg at bedtime and the most common side effect on abrupt withdrawal in disturbed sleep for a couple nights after stopping the medication. There is always the possibility of odd reactions occurring because those of us with this decease are on so many other drugs, Anything could occur. I would follow my doctors advice and also ask your pharmacist about any medication questions you may have. Guest guest
Jim, Are we talking about Mirapex (Pramipexole Dihydrochloride) which is a dopamine agonist? I was looking at this site: http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH?d=dmtSimple & c=214220 & p=~br,IHW|~st,8124|~r,\ WSIHW000|~b,*| That does not sound like the same medicine as you describe. I have heard of Mirapex being used for Parkinson's and MSA for several years. Guest guest
Vera,!!!!! Please ignore the reply I sent you, I made a mistake in the spelling of the drug when I looked it up. Sorry. Jim S. Guest guest
Jim, Funny you mention this ... I spent the past night with LOTS of cramping in my feet and calves. Why suddenly? Dunno. I didn't do anything different. Nor do I use Mirapex. If only it was caused by that !! I would stop using it immediately! ;-) Oh well. Time for an old fashioned cure. Tonight I'm going to do a long hot soak. Hopefully that will help relax my muscles. Regards, =jbf= B. Fisher
Guest guest
, If this problem is rather constant, some muscle relaxants may help. Ask your doctor and pharmacist. Guest guest
, No we were talking about two different drugs. I mistyped the generic name and did a search. See my last message, when I realized what I had done, I sent a retraction. It was a very stupid mistake on my part. About Methotrexate, you are right about its primary use but the medical doctors use it as a back up drug in rheumatoid arthritis because it is a powerful anti-inflammatory. You were also correct about it being a dangerous drug. God Bless, Jim S. Guest guest
Jim, I figured as much, that why I questioned it. That's the trouble with drug names, one letter can make a huge difference. That's why I always cut and paste the name of the drug I am putting info on. I use intellihealth a lot as they have good info.
