ask the doc , but maybe a soft cervical neck collar? I use to wear one

backwards so i could swallow with my chin down. I also use a half

circular neck pillow filled with micro mini beads. Costs about 20.-30.,

but very durable and washable. I am going to start back at o.t and p.t.

You can make these yourself or have someone make them for you by folding a

terry hand towel in half and stitching around the three open sides. Leave a

small opening so that you can fill it. I put rice in the ones that I have

made. The hold heat for a while after being heated for 5 minutes in

microwave. Finnally sew up the small opening you left for putting in

rice/beans.

Mike, This may sound silly but I rub Warren's neck with Aspercream. He

says it really relieves the pain at least for a while. We use heat also.

I cannot imagine that anyone's neck/shoulder area LOOKS worse than my mom's

(Joyce). She is totally bent over into her chest. Yet, she has no pain

(thankfully). This is so curious to me. Debbie

This also sounds familiar. The head is so heavy and the neck just cannot

hold it up because the control of it is about gone. Ralph was that way

too. But there were days when he hurt terribly. Most of the time he did

not. It was so difficult for him to see or to eat because he could not

hold up his head. The muscles were strong he just could not do it. I got

a neck brace for him from his therapist. It worked for a while but his

head was so heavy it would make his face hurt where the brace touched

him. He finally gave it up.

I hate this illness!!!!! Everyday you have a new challenge and a new

heartache.

Barb -- My mother Joyce also has such a hard time of it because of the neck.

She cannot see except what is below her. In fact, she has an appointment set

up for Nov 7 (if she gets out of the hospital in time) with someone to see

whether she is a candidate for vertibropasty (where they cement areas where

there are fractures). IN my mom's case, there is some reason to believe that

some of the neck problem is NOT MSA related. But who really knows. Even if

she had perfect posture at this point, things would still be terrible. I

hate this disease, too. I have never seen anyone more disable than my mom is

now. Debbie

  • 4 weeks later...

,

Often pain in the back of the neck associated with MSA is caused by

muscles in the back of the neck cramping. Anti-spasm and muscle relaxers

such as Baclofen and Amantadine seem to help many people and others use

something called Neuronten (sp) which I think is a pain med. From

my wife and adopted daughter's experience with neuro-surgery, I would use

it only as a last resort.

Has your husband seen a neurologist? Especially one with experience

in movement disorders.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte

The literature on MSA on the Web lists neck pain as a symptom. How

is this related, and what is cervical dystonia? Thank-you.
