I've had that problem with some products. A lot of things that are artificially

sweetened are way too sweet for me now! A lot of people rave about the U-Turn

and One Way protein bars, but I think they are disgustingly sweet! I cannot

stomach most of the protein shakes.

I usually make protein the main focus of my meals. Cottage cheese and/or

egg for breakfast, chicken or fish just about all the rest of the time! Make

sure to eat your protein first, then veggies (and carbs last if you still

have room). I also bought an unflavored protein powder from GNC (it's their

brand with the black and red label). I've not mixed it with chili or soup

yet, but it mixes quite well with pineapple juice. Pacific Bariatric recommends

we not drink more than 4 oz. of a regular juice (100% juice) in one day because

of the sugar content. However, 4 oz. of pineapple juice and one scoop of

this protein powder is not a bad way to get 22g of quick protein!

Here is one of my current faves in a high-protein meal at the moment. Unfortunately,

I do not have the exact nutritional information, but I'll post it if there

is interest.

Jen's Husband's New Mexican Creation

Ground pork

Salsa

Cheddar cheese

Fat-free vegetarian refried beans

Cook the pork in loose chunks, add salsa and simmer. Heat up refried beans.

Shred cheese (or add it to the beans to get it all melted). Plop on a plate

and enjoy.

This is really great if you've got a family that likes mexican food because

they can put it on top of nacho chips, make burritos or tacos, or whatever.

It's also great as a left-over!! I would just stick a spoonful of left-over

pork, a spoonful of veg. f/f refried beans, and a slice of cheese in a microwavable

plastic bowl and heat it for about 45 seconds. Then I'd stir it all together

into one lump of concoction. Yummy!!

Has anybody else out there found themselves craving spicy foods post-op?!

I've been on a spicy (but not too spicy) kick for about 4

months now!!

Hugs,

Jen

One thing that I've experienced -- and I'm 3 months post-op -- is

the dramatic difference in my tastebuds. I could drink protein drinks, eat

protein bars, you name it -- before WLS -- and now that taste or smell of

anything with a manufactured protein base in it makes me absolutely sick.

Forget the drinks -- and I've tried numerous concoctions. Forget the bars

-- I've tried numerous brands only to throw them out. Even though the Kashi

bars aren't super high in protein -- only 13 grams -- they were like eating

candy beofre WLS when I was doing Weight Watchers -- and now ICK! Has anyone

else had this experience? If you have, has it changed back? And if you

have, what have you done to best get in your protein?

Hi Jen, I have! I'm a lot more likely to go for a taco salad now than before

surgery. I do know that some people (non-wls) short circuit a sweet tooth by

going for spicy instead. I've used dill pickles that way.

Hi Jen,

Its funny you mention about spicy foods. I'm almost two weeks post-op (wed) and since the surgery that is all I crave. I'm still on liquids but I've been having things like hot & sour soup, french onion soup, etc. (broth only). I can't seem to get enough. I started to drool after reading your reciepe. I printed it and can't wait until I'll be make some. If you have any other recipes that you could share it would much appreciated or have ideas of what to fix. Thank you.
