I'd like to ask the group about improvements that seems to occur without

any changes in medications. My husband, 76, had gotten a prescription for

a wheelchair, but we have not had to fill it, he seems so well now. We got

him a rollator which has a seat, and he can walk quite well with that. In

addition, his blood pressure has been up quite a bit the last several

visits to the neurologist--who would rather see it a little high than low.

We had gotten a condom catheter for him, as it was so hard for him to get

up at night, but he thrashed about so much, it came off, and alas, I forgot

to shut the valve one night--bad idea. Now he uses the depend briefs and

gets up fairly well, and is not dizzy. I don't understand what is going

on--not that we aren't thrilled with this state of affairs. We do realize

that his condition is not nearly as bad as many of those who write in, and

at times we both have a good laugh at some of the e-mails. Sam was

diagnosed almost 3 years ago. Thanks for any insights. Sam and Lou

Lou,

MSA does have peaks and valleys. It is never predictable. Hang onto the Rx for

the wheelchair, you may need it.

It could be that Sam had a minor infection and that he got over it on his own.

Infection is often the cause of sudden worsening of symptoms with MSA. Always

remember that MSA patients often run below " normal " temperatures and may be

running a fever at 98.6 deg.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte

If u got a prescription for a wheelchair and the insurance will cover it

Get it:) SOmetimes they do change their minds. If they say they won't

pay for it cause they paid for the walker with the seat, well then pay

the 50 for the seat or what a seat would cost and they should pay for

the wheelchair then.

He can seem well today and yucko tomorrow. Somedays you would see me and

think the same as u and then other times or days i am wiped out. Ok

reread ur post and saw u guys have a sense of humor. yippee! ok some

days I have really bad hair days:)

You guys go to Physical therapy??or have one come to ur home?? What

hobbies do u do?

nancy:)

Lou, Enjoy the improvements by all means. No one really knows whats

going on but take it as a gift if he's doing better. Will keep our fingers

crossed that it continues.

  • 2 weeks later...

Greetings Sam and Lou!

My own experience is that there is LOTS of variation in the symptoms. I

will get much better, then the next day have trouble walking (slowness and

balance). This cold that my daughter brought home has tossed me for a loop.

Once again my lungs appear to have constricted without opening. It makes it

very hard to breathe and walk. Sally, HOW DO YOU LIVE WITH THIS?

Unfortunately, the steroid inhaler doesn't seem to touch it.

But I guess I would rather have something that can leave me able to function

some days with some bad than not. Rather like seeing the glass half full.

I just need to keep reminding myself of that on those bad days!

Regards,

=jbf=

B. Fisher
