Guest guest
hi ds had a cleft palate and after it was repaired he has more foods and dribble came out his nose than ever! - our speech language therapist and also the plastic surgeon said that in ds's case it had to do with swallowing function - now that the palate was closed it made a bit more pressure and the food/saliva could be being forced up sometimes instead of down ... does have troubles with swallowing? Josh is mainly gtube fed, but explores food, and eats about a tablespoon at a sitting on a good day at the moment - he was covered in sour cream last night, lovely stuff to play with :0) We don't have any solutions, except to wait and trust that those swallowing processes will improve with time and practice ... we don't have any special exercises that i can think of ... Josh already seems to be doing what ever the therapist suggests, If you find out anything in particular from anyone, i would be interested to hear please! Guest guest
Jo, Pat never had a g-tube or anything but with her submucus cleft when she fed by her bottle most of it would come out her nose. Sometimes I would plug her nose for only a moment so she could swallow. We thought she was so skinny because she only got 1/2 a bottle basically. And she had to be fed every two hours, even through the night. It would take 1 hour to get her to have 2 cc's. That was when my husband and I sure loved each other! Ha! Oh, and she swallowed better when part of her nose was plugged with mucus! I would clear her nose after she ate! She grew out of it and learned how to swallow. It was gradual, but she learned. She still doesn't eat some things because they are harder for her to swallow, but at 19 she sure isn't malnutritioned. and hasn't been since she was about 1 1/2. By the way, when I was 19 I had to have my tonsils out. I was dating this young man and went over his house about three days later. Still recovering I was sitting at the dinner table in front of his entire family and drank some iced tea. I swallowed it only to have all of it come out my nose. Apparently throughout my live my tonsils were so big that now they were gone I had to learn how to swallow differently! Good luck Bonnie
