I too noticed that when I first started on Minocin--large bruises. But now 6

weeks later, I don't have bruises, but am having profuse nose bleeds daily.

Sometimes for 20 minutes. Anyone had that happen with Minocin? I also take

Biaxin--hopefully not an interaction.

People have mentioned pigmentation previously--is this considered permanent?

you stay on? Also, do spots get larger or what? How does this problem

show itself?

Thank you all.

My " bruising " hyperpigmentation was pretty severe with the minocin as far

as color and the size. I only got hyperpigmentation when I banged my legs

against something. I was brusising very easily. Internist ran tests and

nothing was wrong as far as bleeding problems. I started taking vit K and

this greatly cut down on the easy bruising. I had read that people with RA

often have a deficiency in Vit K and this could cause easy bruising.

It took almost 8 months of being off of the minocin to notice some fading.

NOw they are barely noticeable ( after a year) and I am really the only

one who knows they are there because they are so light. Sure beats that

" beat-up " look! I do imagine this is probably as light as they will get,

but compared to where they were, this is GREAT!

I must say I think the hyperpigmentation was fate because the doxi has

been the drug that I think is going to conquer this RA !

Does this sound like what you guys are talking about? I get these once in a

rare while, more when on steroids. I do take vit K, it is in a calcium

supplement I take. Shepherd's purse tea is also a good source, learn to

identify it and you can get it free, it is a common weed. Also, vit E is

supposed to help with capillary wall integrity, isn't it? Liz G

The last time I had blood tests, my gp said my hemoglobin was low, which

he said was pretty standard for someone being treated for RA. He said

this could show up with increased bruising and bleeding. Since then, I

got a huge bruise on my hip from a very minor knock that turned horrible

colors and took weeks to go away. I've not had any nosebleeds but I've

noticed I get alot more knicks on my legs when I shave them and they

bleed like made for a long time afterwards. It could be I'm hacking

myself to death because me hands aren't great at holding the razor but I

also think the low hemoglobin is a contributing factor.

The best thing on the market for capillary integrity, and all blood vessels for

that matter, is rutin. It is part of the vitamin B family, but not vitamin B

per se. It is especially recommended for those who have hemmrhoids (sp?) as it

strengthens the blood vessel walls and prevents them from swelling. On a

maintenance dosage of 250-1000 mg a day, it prevents hemmrhoid attacks as well

as preventing bruising.

Dear Liz,

Thanks for your thoughts on my " spots " . Saw the dermatologist for something

else and showed him and he said they're not from AP but are bruising and

could be from NSAIDS which I think affect clotting. I also take fish oil

pills which thin blood. So he's suggesting some blood work when I see rheumy

to check clotting time and some other things.

So...you're a great medical detective! If you find that reference, I'd love

it.

And we should all be aware if we start bruising more easily with purplish

bruises near capillaries, etc.

Thanks again, Liz.

Regarding taking Vitamin K: I had begun bruising easily with the least

bump, etc. I read in Dr. Lee's book " What Your Doctor May Not Tell You

About Menopause " that if you are taking antibiotics, you should also be

taking Vitamin K, that it is necessary for normal blood clotting and a

beneficial factor in bone building. (Page 176)

Our colon bacteria synthesizes enough of this ordinarily, but when we take

antibiotics, it may be compromised so that we are producing insufficient

amounts. I personally added one 100 mcg. tablet daily of the Kal brand. It

took a little while, but I am no longer having the bruising problem. I also

take an acidophilus combination to help restore the good bacteria.
