First let me say I've enjoyed reading your posts very much and appreciate the thoroughness with which you reply to questions! I do have a question that I hope you can help me with. I'm not sure about Minocin, but no where have I read that either doxycycline or azithromycin are effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae (gram-negative bacteria). My source re. the Zithro information is: http://www.pfizer.com/hml/pi%27s/zithromaxmacpi.html It's 25 pp printed out. I am hoping that my information is simply inadequate and that you are correct. Another possibility is that I've been associating the wrong Klebsiella species with AS? Are you aware of any published source that indicates Zithro is effective against Klebsiella bacterium? Additionally, I looked up clarithromycin (Biaxin), and it too did not list K. pneumoniae; however, ciprofloxacin DID. I truly don't mean to be a fly in the ointment; I'd just like to get things straight in my own head. Thank you in advance. Starla (Hazel's daughter) ___________________ Hello Starla, Hello everyone, The information on the effectiveness of Minocin against most strains of Klebsiellas comes from the " Compendium " , the book published every year by pharmaceutical companies to provide doctors and pharmacists in Canada with a detailed description of prescription medication in Canada. Also available in some libraries. The " Compendium " says that Dalacin, the brand name for oral Clindamycin, has no effect against Klebsiella pneumoniae. The " Compendium " , I believe, mentions that Zithromax is effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae. You should be able to confirm its effectiveness by downloading the Zithromax info from Mosby's Rx List at: http://www.rxlist.com Biaxin is not identified as being effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae. One last point about the usefulness of Zithromax: Minocin will stop the replication of bacterias, leaving it to the body's immune system to kill bacterias. Zithromax is a KILLER of bacterias. Hence, a speedier recovery is more likely if you combine Minocin and Zithromax. Dr. Franco prescribes Zithromax, 250 mg, as 2 or 4 capsules per week. Maximum dosage for long term use of Zithromax is 5 capsules per week. Pierre Ankylosing Spondylitis, 18 Years Antibiotics, 10 Months
