They monitored him once a year and was on antibiotic at bedtime. No further problems and he is 13 now. Guest guest Posted April 22, 2004 Report Share Posted April 22, 2004 hi and Jody, thanks for your replies ... ds had a regular appointment yesterday with ds's ped, so he answered a few of our questions and got us an appointment with the ped surgeon early next week - so we'll be able to discuss all our options then. Feel much less overwhelmed ... doesn't look like they will want to do such a major surgery the week before we move and can be transferred on to our new area ... i was concerned that it needed to be done now and unsure of what any delay might mean. i also got the impression that this sort of surgery (reimplantation) is not performed very often any more and is a bit controversial as to whether it is better to fix now or delay and monitor. ds did/does have very severe kidney reflux and i imagine that he will probably need the surgery ... eventually, but fingers crossed! ds is on a daily antibiotic daily too, Jo ----- Original Message ----- Jo - Ethan too is on an antiobiotic (Bactrim) now for his possible reflux. He had a VCUG last year which did not indicate reflux, but when he has his testicle surgery done next year, the urologist is going to do a cystogram during surgery to double check if he is refluxing. Guest guest Posted April 22, 2004 Report Share Posted April 22, 2004 Hi Jo, My son has/had vesicoureteral reflux but this is now 'not significant' as shown by his DTPA scan last October. If the ureters had still been dilated then the surgeon wanted to do a STING procedure to resolve the reflux. This is a Subuteral polytetrafluorethylene injection. They inject teflon into the ureters to stop the reflux and it seems to have good results. It is much less invasive than surgery and can be done in an outpatient clinic (I think). My son still takes prophylactic antibiotics daily. He is on ciprofloxacin as he has had a number of pseudomonas infections. Prior to the cipro he was on Trimethoprim. Hope this helps. The Cipro has stopped him getting pseudomonas infections but I don't know if I'm too happy about him still being on it as he's been on it for almost 2yrs and it's not that widely used in children (apart from kids with Cystic Fibrosis). We see his nephrologist on Thursday and I'm going to ask if he still needs to be on the prophylaxis. Hope all goes well with the house move and you all get to enjoy some quality leisure time together.
