Guest guest
Hi, Jeannette Here, e....I have really held off saying this. As you may remember I did the ATD's and thus far that has worked. BUT if I needed a different treatment I would not do RAI...I would find the best surgeon if I had to travel. Now to put this decision into some perspective let me tell two things. One: I did a several hundred person survey about how everyone was doing post treatment and RAI emerged as very problematic for lots of people. It is posted in the archives of this group if you want to look at it. Two:....and I don't share this very often....I have never had surgery of any kind, as I have been morbidly afraid of it as my mother died on the thyroid operating table when I was a little girl. But now I know that she was the victim of not being properly prepared and probably had a thryoid storm. The amazing thing is that what I learned about RAI scares me more than my resistance to surgery. I would chose surgery. It amazes me. As Jody said though...we are not our mother's cases... so I urge you to make a rationale decision and consider both your options. Look at each one as objectively as you can. My heart goes out to you. I know there are some folks who seem to fine with RAI....if that becomes your option we will all be pulling for you. It is so hard to think when we are hyper..hang in there. Guest guest
e, My heart is breaking for you, no one should have to go through what you are right now. Truly I wish you would take a hard look at what and are telling you, I am so worried that if you have RAI tomorrow you will be in thyroid storm before weeks end if you aren't already. And the feelings of dispair and not caring are more from this disease than the person you are. If you do go through with RAI tomorrow, my prayers and thoughts will be so very much with you. Please check in often...but before you swollow that pill, or the cocktail...talk to the Nuclear Medicine Physician about your symptoms...if you are already near thyroid storm, he may beable to get you the help and treatment that you truly need BEFORE taking the RAI. PRAYERS AND *HUGZ* for you. Guest guest
e, Is there another Emergency Room in a different hospital you could go to right now? I think it would be worth it to try, if at all possible. Guest guest
Oh e, You have lifted such a weight from my heart hearing that you talked to your dr. and he is going to check things out before going ahead with RAI. If you are hospitalized do you have a friend or relative that you could send in their e-mail address so we can keep track of how your doing? I know for myself, when I don't see a post from you at least every couple of days I worry about you because of all you have had to endure. Please know that while you get through this, and surgery, if that is what is done, only good thoughts and lots and lots of prayers will be sent your way. Our family was reminded very recently just how strong the power of prayer is. God Bless You... *HUGZ* Jody ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Guest guest
Hi e- I'm going to post from an Emergency Medicine text on thyroid storm. I'm not a doctor but I think you need to get yourself to a physician since I think this fever is very concerning. My husband is an academic emergency physician at our regional level 1 trauma center and this is the text that he uses at his hospital. Now that you are not on any medication, I'm very worried about you. " The generally accepted diagnostic criteria for thyroid storm are a temperature higher than 37.8 C (100 F); marked tachycardia out of proportion to the fever; dysfunction of the CNS, cardiovascular system or gastrointestinal (GI) sytem; and exaggerated peripheral manifestations of thyrotoxicosis. " " The signs and symptoms of storm usually occur suddenly, but there may be a prodromal period with subtle increases in the manifestations of thyrotoxicosis. " It's me again. I think it's VERY important that they closely monitor you post-RAI. And if you see yourself in the above description, get yourself to a hospital now. If you need to print this out and take it with you, please do. An emergency room should have a copy of this text, It's Emergency Medicine: A comprehensive study guide, 4th ed., and it's put out by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The piece I quoted is on p 962. I don't know where you live but thyroid storm is sometimes misdiagnosed at smaller hospitals. Please let us know how you're doing tomorrow. We're all praying for you. Take care, Barbaree wrote: > Jeannette, > > I am having the RAI tomorrow. Guest guest
e, From all I have been reading, in this group and in some of the URL's recommended from , Elaine, Elaine and , along with some other stuff, I think they treat thyroid disease a LOT differently in Europe and the Far East than they do in the U.S. I also think they take thyroid disease, Graves Disease a lot more seriously than it is done here in the States. Why...I have no idea, unless it is that this country can't stand for any other nation, drs. of other nations research of other nations to be more advanced than this country is. >>>My doctor initially told me that I should take at least a week off from >>>work. He always starts writing out an excuse . He never mentioned bed >>>rest. He did tell me no exercise at all, including walking. You must >>>have been worse than me.<<< It doesn't mean that was in worse shape than you are, I think it just means she was treated so very different than you have been. I love to read 's posts because she does so much research and shares all that she learns with the rest of us...and her recommendations to you are something I hope you truly give thought to. From s post: >>You have the same diagnostic criteria now that they use for diagnosing >>thyroid storm.<< This is something I have been very worried about with all that you have been exhibiting. I have been in Thyroid Storm...and the ER and hospital where I was admitted STILL didn't diagnose me...they did tell me that if I hadn't come in when I did, I would have been dead in 24 hours or less....after 8 days in that hospital I signed myself out, came home, called a different dr. (this was on a Friday) got an appt. on the following Monday...was diagnosed by Wed. and had an appt. by that Friday with an endo in a different state. BIG difference in the doctoring here. But your symptoms have scared me silly...no one should have to go through that. The week-end I had to wait from leaving the hospital until my next appt. was an eternity, I had to sleep in the recliner because I still couldn't breathe, to go upstairs to use the bathroom (only one in house) I literally had to crawl up them on hands and knees, and come down them on my behind...and this was GOOD compared to when I went into the hospital. The anger at the drs. treating me in the hospital comes from the fact that the lab people kept telling the drs. " look at her thyroid " ...I didn't find this out for 2 mos. and then only because my older sister told me...but they had been told it was the thyroid...they chose to believe that a " lowly lab person " couldn't have a clue because they were the drs. From 's post: But... take your time before any drastic decission. >>If it was me: 1) I would ask for a SECOND OPINION. 2) It seems to me you might need to switch doctor. 3) I would insist with thyroid blockers, PLUS steroids if you have allergies, and WITH betablockers. 4) An anti-depressant could be helpfut for a while.<< She is giving you some excellant guidelines here. (I do have to say I don't know what the steroids with thyroid blockers do, and hope will explain them for me, just because I am curious) Maybe your dr. placing you in the hospital for a while would be a good thing...you will get some rest, have 24 hour care...and it just might get your boss off your behind...seems bosses take our illnesses more seriously if we are actually IN the hospital, I think it makes it all more " legitamate " in there minds... I have found with my Primary, it is all in presentation with how your present things to them...last year he and I got into a screaming match that could be heard down the hall (his office is in the hospital) This past March, after learning about this disease (yeah have had it for 4 years, but didn't LEARN about it until this past January (and still continue to learn so very much) I talked reasonably with my dr. I even apologized to him for my Graves Rage last year...bless his heart he told me (while reading my chart)he didn't even remember it...I know he did because our relationship had been strained since the arguement. Anyhow, we had a long talk about my Graves, he even admitted to me that I probably know more about the disease than he does having lived with it...and he is very very glad I am seeing a new endo in June. He even hugged me before he left the exam room and told me that *we* would all work through this together once I see the new endo and we have a plan of where to go next. So maybe when you see yours tomorrow, you could just kind of let him know how afraid you are, and that YOU need to be involved with getting better, you don't want to leave it all on his shoulders, and then ask him if he would bring someone else in for a second opinion. I know it sounds like *sucking up* ... but sometimes we have to play the game... so we have to write our own rules. Your current relationship is very strained with this dr...especially when he refuses to allow you to see someone else...and the last thing you need to add is more stress on yourself with another confrontation, not while you are so very sick. So if you get him involved with bringing in someone else, it just may help you get someone else, the second opinion without the confrontation. So be honest with him, tell him how very sick you are, that it isn't in your head and that your scared, and ask him to please please help you...and that one thing that you believe will help you feel more at ease is having a second opinion and could he arrange it. Worth a shot anyhow...but the most important thing is to get whatever is going on under control. *HUGZ* and PRAYERS. Jody PS...When I went on Friday to my Primary for something going on with my ear, we were walking out to the front desk together, he asked me what I would do if I didn't like this new endo...I grinned at him, told him " fire her and keep on looking " he walked away chuckling and shaking his head. I don't think he knows what to make of my attitude towards drs. but at least he knows I won't quit looking...I got THIS kind of strength from other people with Graves who have gone before us and paved the way....we do learn from each other and truly care for and respect each other. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Guest guest
Jeannette, I am having the RAI tomorrow. I don't feel like I have much of a choice. My job is very much in jeopardy because I have been sick for a long time and going to the endocrinologist once a week (which is far away). The nurse told me that the recovery time for the surgery would be a couple of weeks. I just would not have a job if I took off two weeks. I have been pretty much suicidal for the past couple months , so I am not really concerned about how the RAI will hurt me. I was taken off of ATD's over a week ago because I had a fever. Well, I have had a fever for over a week now. I don't know what is wrong with me. I take Tylenol every 3 hours so that I don't get a real high fever. Every night I wake up with a fever and then a couple hours after I take a handful of Tylenol I start sweating profusely. I work at a mental health center and the psychiatrist there has been chasing me around for three months trying to give me some Prozac. I have been in bed all weekend. I worked this past week and then went to bed at 6:00 o'clock in the afternoon each day. I was pretty much bed ridden last weekend also, except for going to the emergency room with a 105 fever on Saturday night. What the hell is wrong with me????? My endocrinologist did not seem concerned about the fever that I have had for 10 days now. e Re: e > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > e....I have really held off saying this. Guest guest
WHY ON EARTH arren't they giving you steroids to get rid of allergies??? How they will control the release of HORMONES right after bombarding the thyroid with RAI? Sure they can give you IK but you'll go madly hypo, added to RAI effects. NO FUN!!!. Is going to hell and back You'll miss your worst hyper days Let me elaborate a more quiet message e. Your posts have touched me very much. I'll be back in a while. Guest guest
I don't believe it was a virus e. In my opinion wou're close to thyroid storm. Fever can also be present while having rashes anyway. But having in mind your symptoms dare I to think you're ar risk right now, and you'll be much more if you take RAI. At least, if you take it so soon. Did they give you the results?. If so, would you mind sharing them here for us to know?. > >Reply-To: graves_supportegroups >To: <graves_supportegroups> >Subject: Re: e >Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 17:11:20 -0700 > >, > >I was told at the emergency room over a week ago that I probably had a >virus. Guest guest
, How do I get normal hormone levels if I can not take ATD's? I guess that is why the previous plan was to get me down to normal on ATD's and then schedule the RAI. e Re: e > > > > > > > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > > > > > > > e....I have really held off saying this. Guest guest
, I was told at the emergency room over a week ago that I probably had a virus. But I don't think a virus can last this long (over 10 days). They took a white blood cell count , which they said was low. They also did complete thyroid tests on me that they were supposed to be sending to my doctor (they could not get the results for the thyroid tests while I was there). I made it quite clear to the emergency room that I had thyroid problems. All of this stuff pretty much is making me panic right now. e Re: e > > > > > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > > > > > e....I have really held off saying this. Guest guest
Hi e- Not all emergency rooms are staffed by emergency medicine residency trained doctors. And even if the emergency room you went to did, doctors make mistakes. Whether or not the emergency room is staffed by a residency trained emergency physcian, often depends on where you're located. Please don't panic. I think it's very good that you're going in tomorrow. And you still can keep in mind that you can go to the emergency room if you think you should (but Jody's right go to a different one if you can-and if you can't make sure the doctor gets a hold of your endo while you're there-do that if you go to a different ER too). You have the same diagnostic criteria now that they use for diagnosing thyroid storm. Do they at least have you on propanolol? Take care, Barbaree wrote: > , > > I was told at the emergency room over a week ago that I probably had a > virus. But I don't think a virus can last this long (over 10 days). Guest guest
To everyone: I got so freaked out about possibly being in Thyroid Storm that I called my diagnostic clinic. My doctor just so happened to be the doctor on call this weekend. I reiterated to him that I had a high fever for the last 10 days. Well, he told me that something was definitely wrong (he's a genius, huh?) and that it did not sound like a virus (that is what the emergency room told me a week ago). He also told me that I was to still come on in at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and that I should pack a bag in case he admits me to the hospital. I think he said he is going to run some tests first. He said he did not know if they would go ahead and do the RAI. He has always wanted me to have surgery instead. After all of the things I have heard about RAI, surgery does not sound so bad now. I am thinking that if my levels are out of control , that he will push for surgery instead and that may not be so bad, aside from being off of work and being in trouble with my boss. I could just say that I did not have any control over it and it would be the truth. Thanks to everybody who has helped me make it through all of this. e .. Guest guest
e: I really think that and are giving you sound advice. All of us can feel the desparate straits you are in through your messages. It makes sense that neither RAI or surgery should be entered into before you can get calmer and more clear. Please take care of your current condition first, and buy yourself time, so that you will make the best decision for yourself, and also, so that whatever you decide on will have the best outcome. If the emotional symptoms are driving you crazy, please consider taking something to relieve them for the short term, so that you can have some respite. Beta blockers can calm you down but are not effective for emotional lability. Short term use of anti-anxiety medication does not make you addicted. I used Ativan for a few months and now I never take one, never even think of it. My heart goes out to you, and I will keep you in my thoughts, and hope that relief comes to you soon, and calm, and healing, and that you make the best decision for yourself and for your future. Guest guest
Hi e- The shortness of breath is Graves' related. I'm glad that they have you on Atenolol since that will help protect your heart. It's also good that you're on the younger side. The ER doctor probably didn't make the viral diagnosis, the endocrinologist probably was worried that you had a threatening infection (viral or otherwise) that you wouldn't be able to effectively fight with a lowered WBC. And the ATDs can cause lowered WBC. Regardless, I'm just speculating. Just keep as calm as you can under the circumstances and be assured that the anxiety and despair that you're feeling will not last. I didn't start having anxiety or panic attacks until I had been hypo for years. And they were terrifying! I felt like I was going to die. Anyhow, the anxiety and despair have disappeared once my thyroid levels were brought into the midnormal range. I haven't had any of those kinds of problems for more than a year (that's when I was finally treated) even though my mother died last August. She died and we didn't expect it and I loved her very much. I would think if anything would have brought on anxiety and panic attacks, that would have but it didn't. Don't get me wrong. I've been very emotional since her death but it wasn't the same as the thyroid-related problems. I think it's the normal part of the grieving process. Take care and (as if you haven't been reminded enough) we're all praying for you. Barbaree wrote: > , > > I don't take propanolol but I take another beta blocker , Atenolol. Guest guest
e, Just zipping through these messages so I don't know the chronology. . . I just wanted you to know I understand how horrible it is to be unable to take ATDs and faced with such a difficult decision. I too was allergic to ATDs and was devestated when I found out--I felt very hopeless and doomed to surgery or RAI. After much consideration, I decided to have surgery. For me, there is something completely counterintuitive about swallowing radioactive material. Miraculously, I didn't have to have surgery or RAI as my disease went into remission spontaneously, more likely because I weaned a nursing baby and did many alternative things. I put my hold life on hold for three solid months and simply focused on my health. is right---without your health you will have nothing and your job won't matter a bit. Please, ask your doctors tomorrow if there's any way you can buy yourself some time to stabilize, think things through. Realize that tomorrow you may be pressed into making a decision that you may not be ready to make. I would make your first priority asking how you can be given two more safe weeks as your body stabilizes for whatever treatment is ahead, having better security before heading into treatment AND time to decide which one. I join those urging you to learn more about the regrets many, many people have about RAI. My personal choice would've been surgery. I will be thinking of you, remembering the dark few days of panic when I was so sick and without any options for treatment that didn't seem invasive and/or dangerous. B PS: Why can't you take ATDs? High fever, low blood count? Be sure you're fully updated on this too and perhaps get a second opinion on that!!? While I developed liver disease from PTU and was told I couldn't take any ATDs and was busy scheduling surgery, I then found out from the Mayo Clinic endorinologist that he would've tried tapazole because he doesn't think the liver problems are universal between both drugs and all people. . . just make sure. Guest guest
, How do you lower your hormone levels if you can't take ATD'S? I am allergic to both ot them. The final straw was when I started having fever and a lowered white blood cell count. e Re: e > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > e....I have really held off saying this. Guest guest
, I don't take propanolol but I take another beta blocker , Atenolol. I am always short of breath. I am not sure if that has anything to do with my thyroid or not. While I was at the emergency room last weekend , they did at least call the doctor who was on call at my clinic. He is an endocrinologist. All he said was , get off of PTU immediately. The doctor in the emergency room admitted that he didn't know anything about thyroid disorders. e Re: e > > > > > > > > > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > > > > > > > > > e....I have really held off saying this. Guest guest
, The doctor did tell me a couple of weeks ago, that there was something I had to take before the surgery. He said that if I took it , then I would not be able to change my mind and have RAI instead. I wonder what he is talking about. So I guess the RAI did not work. And you wound up having surgery anyway? THat's weird. I thought they just gave you the RAI again, up to 3 times (although I don't know why you would do that again). I heard that sometimes they mess up in surgery and do something to your vocal chords. The doctor had told me that since my levels were going down that I should be feeling better and that I could not be experiencing anxiety and depression when my levels were going down. My t-3 started out as 867 and two weeks ago it was around 400. I think the normal is under 150. I have never heard of them testing my TSH or T-4 that everyone is always talking about. I quit taking ATD's about 9 days ago. I don't know what my levels could have done in a week. My doctor initially told me that I should take at least a week off from work. He always starts writing out an excuse . He never mentioned bed rest. He did tell me no exercise at all, including walking. You must have been worse than me. I really don't know what the doctor will do in the morning. How long were you in the hospital for the surgery? e Re: e > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, Jeannette Here, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > e....I have really held off saying this.
