Hi Michele,

We recently got a trampoline, primarily for our 13yo, although they all love

it. First on general safety. We spent a lot of money to get an enclosure

that is secured three different ways so if they hit it they bounce back in.

(Some nets are secured with bungies and collapse if a child hits them; they

are not safety enclosures. This trampoline also has springs that go off at

alternating times, so it disburses the impact, so it is not like landing on

concrete if they land wrong. The brand we chose is Alley-Oop.

As far as Dylan goes, he went from being afraid to go in, to sitting with

me, to sitting while we bounce him, to jumping holding onto us and now he is

jumping independently, picking his knees way up etc. I know it is awesome

for his balance. I have always joked that as he got bigger I would need to

build a cage for him to keep him safe when he needed major input. I think

we just got it. Dylan seems to regulate how he feels and when he is up to

jumping. He either loves it or wants nothing to do with it.

My only concern is retinal detachment. I have heard of CHARGErs who have

detached their retinas from vigorous rocking, so am not sure of the risk of

his jumping. Of course I did not think about that before we got it. Now I

just pray a lot and am thankful for the good things we see happening while

he was on it.

The first day we got it, I had more interactive play with Dylan than I have

had in years. I cannot describe what an awesome day it was.

Aubrie,

We bought a trampoline for Bryce and his sister about a year and a

half ago and I think it's great for his balance and sensory issues- not to

mention just plain old fun! But he doesn't have the hip issue. His only

orthopedic

issue is partially dislocated shoulders-so I can't help you there. We do have

the enclosures which I feel are very safe. Bryce couldn't do it without them

due to balance and lack of co-ordination.

wesley has been on a tramp but he doesn't have hip

troubles. because of his balance stuff he doesn't do well with

jumping so if he does someone has to hold his hand or he has

to have time totally to himself on it. he went to a party two

years ago where lots of boys where on at the same time he couldn't

handle that. we have found it helpful to put him on a blanket

on the tramp have him sitting or on his knees and then pull the

blanket suddenly . this makes him have to catch his balance but

the tramp is soft so if he doesn't get it he is not hurt. Wes has

more fun watching the other kids on it mostly. guess you have to

decide if aubrie is one who will be determined to do things she is

not safe at or one who will know her own limits and play it safe.

Hi Michele,

I just talked with one of our magnificent PT's about the trampoline for Aubrie.

She said she would NOT put Aubrie on it until after her surgery and when she is

very stable. She said that given her already loose joints, she would not risk

any more problems. Just one opinion, but this is a seasoned and gifted PT who

has a lot of experience with our CHARGE kids and a variety of other kids and

adults with " issues " .

That's what I was thinking but it sure helps to have an expert opinion.

Sometimes what I think is logical doesn't really make sense because of something

they know that I don't know.

I just wanted to ad that Whitney has colobomas are on her retina, but the

retinal specialist said that the location on her retina was good. I mean that

it

won't detach because the missing tissue is down low, so you may want to find

out the risks of her retina detaching before ruling out the trampoline.

, I have no experience with tramps except that I loved them as a

child---didn't have one, but friends did.

anyway, just a little story to tell you....my niece age 4--perfectly healthy was

jumping on one this fall, at a fair, everything was fine she was jumping and

came down on her feet said oh---started crying and would not pur weight on her

leg--took her to get x-rayed and she broke her leg--just landed wrong. full leg

cast for 6 weeks. she's fine now.

hope all goes well, with all your surgeries and trips etc. I don't envy you,

but send hugs and support your way!!!
