Guest guest
Michele, You first must come up with a list of a hundred reasons why Aubrie needs the evaluation. (exaggerating... but be thorough). Send a formal letter to your district with this information. Let them know that you have the " opportunity " as you will do them a huge favor by bringing Aubrie to the school to be evaluated. Otherwise the district will have to incur the expenses of bringing the person/persons to you, which they would be billed for. Include any letters from physicians stating she needs the evaluation and any therapists etc., and that this is school related, not medically related (they like to throw the medical back at you to forego paying). Luckily since is in a school for the deaf who has a number of deaf/blind kids, we have a great deal of backing for these situations because if the child is to stay in their school, they are always looking for more assistance on educating them. I am not sure what your motives are, but if they include vision (most likely) is Aubrie followed by the Commission for the Blind? They might pay for the evaluation as well. We have had 2 assessments done which they have paid for. Hope this was of some help. Debbie Matasker how to get school to pay We will be going to a wedding in CT this fall and I am going to try to coordinate an eval of Aubrie at Perkins while we are there. Any tips on how to get that eval paid by the school district? Michele W Aubrie's mom 6 yrs

Guest guest
Michele, Going through you services for the blind might help, or do whatever you can. First I would contact Perkins though to find out if it is feasible for scheduling that. It does take a while. Them if things are good you should know that most evaluations, ESPECIALLY Psychological, do not have norms to evaluate our children with. Unless you are a specialists who not only understands deaf/blind, but CHARGE, then many of those evaluations mean little. I cant tell you the numerous specialists who thought they knew what they were doing who had no clue. Then came Perkins. Thiers was the first eval (age 14!), report/recomendations that actually was about Patty. I couldn't believe they got her so perfectly. Not only do they take the whole child into account, they have many children who have CHARGE syndrome being serviced at their school . The PT understands the impact of vision on their mobility, the speech understands the sensory motor issues.... BUT again remember most of all there is not psych eval, anywhere, that can be done for our children with accuracy. There are no norms. But with that a psych can be done at Perkins by individuals who are specialists who understand the impact of all the disabling conditions, and make accurate reports/recommendations from the eval. I just said no one can do it but them. That was true then and it still is now. So, I told them no one in our district will do a psych eval. I refused for years. Finally they allowed Perkins to perform the triennial. I think they were looking to prove me wrong and place Patty in a contained setting. It didn't work out that way. I know I am rambling. It is early in the morning here. But I would do anything to get them involved. They are the true specialists in CHARGE. Oh, and are you looking at sign language yet? By the way, what about a visit here? How long are you going to be in CT? Bonnie, Mom to a 21, patty CHARGE 18, and wife to
Guest guest
Thanks for the reminders of the things we talked about at the conference! I forgot about the sign lang issue -- didn't totally forget, but didn't think of it related to this. And I didn't think about being so near to you! Let me see how our schedule works out. With a wedding, the family stuff will take up most of our time. Then there's the issue of cost the longer we stay... It would be fabulous to see you and your family again! I'll be in touch- Michele Re: how to get school to pay Michele, Going through you services for the blind might help, or do whatever you can.
