RE: No bowel prep?

My surgical date is Oct. 20, and my surgeon told me that he doesn't require

a bowel prep (laxitives or enemas to clean out the bowel). I was happy to

hear that at the time, but now I wonder why it isn't necessary when the

surgery involves the bowel. As a nurse, I know that even a tiny bit of

fecal matter let loose in the abdominal cavity can cause BIG problems. Have

you had surgery without any bowel prep? I will be on clear liquid for 24

hours pre-op, but that isn't enough to have a clean bowel. Thanks.

JoAnne,

I didn't have to have a bowel prep either. Just the standard not allowed

to eat after midnight. I've am three months out today and have had no

problems. I wonder why that is?

hi, i'm a RN also and i agree with the bowel prep being necessary IMO - i am

a pre and post op nurse and for reg surgeries it was nothing by mouth after

MN but for abdominal surgery i think more is needed. my orders read - 3 days

b4 avoid beef - 2 days b4 soft diet (soup, grits, potatoe, pasta, baked fish

NO FRIED FOODS. the day b4 clear liquid diet (jello, sprite, juice w/o pulp

broth, popsickles, water water and more water. 2 bottles of magnesium

citrate in the early evening and continue with clear liquids until MN (don't

want to dehydrate), hibiclense shower, NOTHING past MN (no gum, mints or

water) brush teeth but don't swallow water - if you are advised by the doc

to take a certain med b4 surgery (high BP pill) take it with a sip of water

- just enough to get it down.

the only thing to me on here that does not make sense is the hibicleanse

shower b/c we don't live in a sterile environment - the second you step out

of the shower and get dressed you are contaminated again. you aren't sterile

until you are in the OR and they clean the area with a betadine item.

it is VERY dangerous and possibly FATAL to have fecal matter outside of the

intestine - it can cause sepsis -- we had a female patient going for some

minor surgery - i forget what but nothing major) and the dr nicked her bowel

- immediately in the recovery room she started showing signs - bad vital

signs - high BP - high fever and distended abdomen - they called the dr and

he was too busy to come see her and told them to do what it takes to get her

VS in check then ship her to her room - she ended up in ICU and was still

having these problems and getting worse by the sec so they called him and

said the same thing - this 36 yr old mom with young kids died b/c her doc is

an asshole. so please be careful and listen to your body and tell your

spouse or whoever to be aware of changes and make sure somebody is aware of

a complication and demand it be handled or mention the nursing supervisor -

do what it takes....

sorry - i don't want to scare anyone but just trying to help.

Would you then do a bowel prep even if your surgeon doesn't require

one, just to be on the safe side? I thought about doing it even

though I don't have to, but then was afraid it might hurt me.

, my guess about the no bowel prep is me do not store stool in

our small bowel. Food passes fairly quickly to the large intestine.

In your Dr.s experience 24 hours of clear liquid must work good.

Otherwise all the other stuff would be ordered. Best of luck.

I had my surgery a month ago at Duke Medical Center, and they did

require a bowel prep, IE

magnesium citrate. Clear liquids the day before and nothing by mouth

after midnight. I have read other obesity surgery sites where they do

not require the MCitrate. So it seems to be a medical opinion

situation. If you already have good faith in your Doc. I'm sure it

will be ok. But it won't hurt you to take the MC if you really feel

the need.

I guess a nicked bowel is rare but it would probably prevent a worse

infection if the bowel was clean. I don't know what my doctor orders yet

but am thinking of making sure my bowel is clean just in case.

don't need a prescription

yes, i would do it on my own - i would tell them the morning of surgery

though that i did it. its OTC by the pharmacist - not prescription - just

drink tons of water b4 MN to prevent dehydration - that makes it more

difficult to get the IV in --
