I didn't know it could trigger Graves...I've been on it for years after my

remission kicked in. As far as other methods I have done quite a bit of

research on the various ones so I'll tell you what I know.

The sponge isn't available any more (at least around here) - though many

women love it

The diaphram in conjunction with spermicides is extreemly effective, it just

requires a bit of before hand work <VBG>

The condoms are expensive, but work well

Norplant and the depo shot are the same chemicals as the pill

IUD is inserted by a doctor and doesn't prevent fertilization, it prevents

the fertilized egg from attaching and growing

Hope this helps

Hi Deb,

Condoms were way to expensive (for the kind that didn't irratate) so I used

a diaphram for years and years. I chose not to go on the pill again after

getting pregnant and miscarrying on it many many years ago. A friend of

mine hemmoraged and almost died from the IUD when it became dislodged and

punctured something.

Tell your hubby there is nothing to a vasectomy...hubby had one in '89. Had

it on a Friday was back to work on Monday and we have had no problems since

then...and it didn't prevent ANYTHING from working :)

My hubby refused to go under the knife and since I was 44 and fed up with

spermicides and condoms and birth control pills (That gave me high blood

pressure), I decided to go under the knife.

It was a hard decision, but it was either that or wreck my marriage!

Here's a semi-related question...those of you who were on the pill...how

long before you got pregnant(or at least started trying) did you decide to

go off it? I have heard anything from 3 - 12 months...

Don't know if this will help. But, my OB/GYN won't give me any kind of

birth control pills, shots etc. He doesn't like the idea with the GD, but

I've been in remission since July, not on no meds. Maybe that will change

his mind. I use good ole condoms, really wish my husband would get some

surgery. I get tired of worrying if I am pregnant. I am almost 44.5 yrs.

old, not that I wouldn't love another one. I also get migraine headaches, so

don't know if that was one of his reasons too.

I've also been looking into alternatives, tho I am still on the pill (I'm

39 and been on the pill for about 8 years now this go around. I'd rather

not be on the pill when i hit 40). I've been considering an IUD, but it

looks like my insurance doesn't cover it. I wont' do the inserts (partly

becasue of reports of problems, mostly becasue when I first looked into

them the doc I saw said they were very unreliable in women over 150

pounds). I've heard problems from larger ladies who got the shots.

I am anxiously awaiting the return of the sponge, which was pulled only

becasue the manufacturer did not want to put the money into upgrading the

factory when the govt mandated stricter standards. The new company who

took over the factory and patent was supposed to bring them out this last

year, but they are still awaiting FDA approval (ARRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!).

I like the sponge the best, tho they have the same failure rate as a

diaphragm, but for me are much more convienient then a diaphragm.

There are lots of options out there. Check out biirthcontrol.com at:

http://www.birthcontrol.com/

There is a Canadian version of the sponge available, tho they use a

different spermicide. I've been giving serious consideration to ordering

those until the Today sponge comes back on the market (tho the Protectaid

sponge is so popular they are either running out of stock or had to raise

the price for a bit).

Is there any reason why a person with Graves disease shouldn't have a

tubal ligation? Are there any risks for us other than the what the

procedure entails. Do we need a different kind of anesthesia than

what a " normal " person would get? Would the surgery itself give a

'shock' to my system and make either hyper or hypo systems come back?

I'm 38, have two little boys, and don't want to risk having another

child. As far as I'm concerned, the Doctor can't get the dosage of

Synthrooid just right for me, much less if I were pregnant. I've

been feeling rather " well " lately and contemplating having the

procedure done. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Vi
