Guest guest Posted October 14, 2001 Report Share Posted October 14, 2001 Hi Crystal! Glad you could join us. It's fairly common to have a period immediately after major surgery. I had a massive, disgusting, extremely uncomfortable period only a couple of days post-op, and it was just awful and I was sooooo sore and couldn't keep myself as clean as I'd've liked to. UGH! There are some things in life you'd just like to forget, KWIM? hehe Anyway, thought, I was at about 250 (I'm only five feet tall) when I had my wls, and I hadn't had a normal period in years either. After the period I had in the hosp, I had them like clockwork for the next year and then resumed trying to get pg and got pg on the first try. I've had a discussion with my gynecologist about PCOS, and he explained it to me like this: In PCOS, when you don't ovulate, your uterus also doesn't shed the lining properly. Occasionally, as the uterine lining " piles up " , some of it will get knocked off and come out, and you'll think you've had a light period, but in actuality you haven't. So that really horrible, long, uncomfortable period I had in the hospital was actually months and months and months of uterine lining sloughing off in a massive oomph. This is also why PCOS sufferers have a much greater risk of uterine cancer, since the lining doesn't get shed properly month by month. It is possible that your periods won't resume normality until your weight gets down lower. As for the birth-control-pill question, we did not use them, so I don't know. One thing you sometimes need to watch with BCPs (or any other oral medication) right after an RNY is that they *may* not be absorbed fully in the shortened intestine, so they may not even be effective. Someone (Barbara?) may be able to correct me on that, I don't know. Keep on losing weight, and your chances of conceiving and carrying successfully to term will only get better. That may seem counter-indicated but believe me the faster you get your tush moving and that blood pumping the quicker you will perk up. It will pass and you'll start to feel on top of the world. I really need to find one, before things get worst for me. I have been looking and looking but have not found one. I am new to this group as well.
