Guest guest
Freaky stuff *is* happening!! Thursday I woke up with a terrible pain in my left wrist. Like, burning inside the bone. It stretched up through my hand, not quite reaching the knuckle bones, and down my wrist a bit. Hurt like the dickens. The *next* morning, I woke up att 5:00 am and the *other* hand was having the same thing happen! I couldn't lift things, I could barely do anything!! It was agony! I took a couple of Advil, and though it still hurt like the dickens, I was ok to do stuff the rest of the day. By Sunday, it was pretty much all over. What on *earth* was it???? Anyone have this happen to them??? Kari >>>Hi Gang, I had something strange happen last night. One of my ears was extremely hot and red the other was freezing cold. I can't believe all the goofy stuff that happens.
Guest guest
Whoa Kari, I have been having something similar happen for the last 3 months but it is in the fingers...usually my ring fingers, first one hand then the other will do it within 2/3 days...no way did I think it had anything to do with GD but now I am not so sure...anyone else have any ideas. I can vouch for how very painful this is. Jody _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
Hi Wilma, Welcome to the group. There is such a wide variety of what you can expect, depending on the treatment you choose to follow. The best thing I can recommend to you in on the home page for this group, just about messages you can type in a message number and click go...I would type in number 1 and just start reading and reading and reading, writing down questions as they jump out at you and asking them of the people in this group. Someone here will always respond. Don't let your dr. try to rush you into RAI or surgery as both are permanent. The best course of action would be for them to start you on ATD's (Tapazol or PTU)to bring your numbers into a more normal range while you learn and educate yourself on this disease and make decisions that YOU are comfortable with. Keep in mind at all times that your dr. works for YOU...it is best to work together. Here you will learn a lot about the ATD's and alternatives others have chosen, how it works for them...check our B's post, I think about message 192 ( HELP if that isn't the one with your story in it). Take your time, learn and don't panic. Your not alone in this anymore. You also may want to share what you have been going through that led to your diagnosis. Oh, tell your dr. right up front that you want a copy of ALL of your lab work, you will beable to chart things down the road with dosage changes, how your feeling and where your numbers lie. It all sounds so confusing right now, but before long it will make sense. Take care, Jody _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
Oh please do let us know about the B-12. I get the leg cramps also, more like charlie horses times 10...in the calfs and a LOT of time in the arch of my feet. When this happens I drink a lot of orange juice and eat baked potatos and that seems to keep them at bay for awhile. This problem with my fingers is just so wierd!!! I can't bend them, can't touch them, sometimes they last for 2/3 days other times they are gone in a matter of hours. Ibuprophen helps to dull the pain but does not take it away. I never attributed it to GD but after reading Kari and Debbies posts...who knows. Will any of us ever know all about this disease? Thanks for keeping us posted...oh, could you ask the dr. if B-12 gelcaps would work the same way? BTW, hubby wanted to give me a gift certificate for a full body massage for my b-day...told him no way, as much as I would love one, my muscles hurt so much lately I can't stand even when he gives me a shoulder rub. It just hurts more Jody _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
Hi Wilma: I was diagnosed last November. After the blood test, I had to do a nuclear scan (thyroid uptake test) to confirm Grave's (as opposed to a tumor). Thereafter, I was given a choice of two options, radioactive iodine (RAI), anti-thyroid drug (ATD). I chose ATDs because I didn't like the sound of RAI, and am still incredibly grateful about it now that I know more. I don't know how severe your symptoms are, but many of us were put on a beta blocker to slow our heartrate. You may also need help with emotional swings that can go from depression to rage. I was ravenous for sugar and consumed huge amounts of chocolate and coca cola, which I regret now because I have gained 30 lbs that is hard to lose. So, my advice in a nutshell: Do your own research and don't agree to RAI without really checking your facts. Watch for symptoms like racing heart or emotional changes and get help for them. Watch what you eat if you can. Have faith, there will be a time when you will feel more in control because you are better informed and have some experience dealing with GD. This group is really amazing and supportive, for me, this group was the most important ingredient in my dealing with GD. I hope you will feel the same support here. Also, you might want to check out the book " The Thyroid Solution " by Dr. Arem, it's really a great primer, available at amazon.com. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Gang as you know I get terrible leg cramps. The massage therapist said that my legs felt like bone not muscle. I so stiff I could hardly walk . Well I went to to naturopath doctor and he did give me some solutions that seem to help. I have always believed that latic acid was the root of my problem. I joined a running club last Thursday and if I could have moved my legs enough I would have jumped off something high on Friday. The endo said no it wasn't lactic acid it was probably the tap. But he offered no solutions likewise the gp and the doctor of internal medicine.( I'm a diabetic,we have all kinds of doctors) I have a friend who suffered similar problem. Her gp was giving her quinine and it helped her to some extent. But her gp did some research and now she is getting B12 shots and feels human again. Now her gp is in the same office as mine. I am going Friday and I'm going to request a shot too. I will let you know results. If this works this lowly gp could become a hero.
Guest guest
Weird, isn't it? Sometimes it's just in one finger!! I have that, from time to time, too. And the week before the wrist incident, I had it in one knee for two days!! It feels like...like hives feel, but inside the bone? Guest guest
I'm not on any of the ATD's Kari, had RAI in May '96, so isn't that. Wonder if it is a different auto-immune disease that has yet to be named cause so many drs. think we are hysterical and these are hysterical symptoms? Guest guest
I was thinking Carpal Tunnel, too, but now with more people with GD having it, maybe it's not? Or maybe it's just a coincidence that we all have CT. It's pretty common, I'm guessing. Kari >>I get pains in my wrist that hurt all the way to my elbow, I associated it with carpal tunnel. It wasn't so much stiff as it was very painful to bend my wrists. I do wonder if it's something calcium related. I've been drinking a LOT of milk lately (more than usual). But also, someone asked where I was on my cycle, and the wrist thing hit just before my period did. I'm sure all these things are inter-related, so I'm not even going to try to guess. could still be carpal tunnel. It's gone, now, and good riddance to it. Guest guest
Kari, I don't think it's genetic. It's caused when excess uric acid builds up and makes crystalline deposits. It's associated with the use of diuretics and certain other meds.

Guest guest
Elaine, Gout is associated with diuretics? I have been on an ace inhibitor with a light dose of a diuretic in it for over a year now. Could this be causing a lot of the muscle and joint pain do you think? It generally happens in my wrists or my knees, so I don't think it is carple tunnels as my hubby suggests (the last couple of times the pain was in my wrists). It usually lasts about a day or 2 then goes away. it is what I've been considering taking glucosomene for (have't gotten around to it yet, the pain goes away and I don't get around to doing anything then). It gets esp worse abut bed time (esp when it hits my knees) as I can't find a position that doesn't hurt. Gravity on the joint is the worst. I've been to the point of crying it hurts so much. Ok, this has become too much to be a coincidence. We're having the exact same pains. Maybe it's not the disease, though. Could it *possibly* be a side effect of a drug? Are we all on PTU or propranolol? (although I'm off that one, now....recently....) Everyone who's having these pains, I mean. Kari

Guest guest
No I think that you can get gout anywhere. However, the fruit thing is scurvy. But Jody I only said I thought the way the pains were acting sounded like gout.
Guest guest
Hi Kari I have had pain that is sometimes terrible like fire in the bone and the muscle or tendons very stiff, in my fingers - usually one at a time and starting at the knuckle, in my wrists and in my shoulders. My upper legs and upper arms get so sore and tired. The pain doesn't seem to attack all at once and usually lasts overnight or about 8hrs. I remember getting this more than 12 months ago. About this time last year I had a the mother of all cramps! My calf muscle was so bad I ended up screaming in pain until it stopped (which it did thank God). The cramps only happen occasionally. I was diagnosed in late May this year with GD and my thyroid is still unstable. I'm on PTU (and on Thyroxin - T4 at present because I went hypo). I feel shocking and only just make it to work and back. I spoke with the endo and the pain recently and he said I was probably getting the flu - but now I read these posts from so many about the same pains and I'm thinking - no way - it ain't the flu! I guess because GD is an auto immune disorder it does make sense that the antibodies can impact anything in our bodies. The little buggers are 'floating' all over us after all. I have been encouraged to have regular massage and I am also getting a spa bath for my bathroom. I don't like the idea of regular pain killers so anything to avoid this would be good. I wish all the endos could actually experience this disease (but just for a short time - i wouldn't wish this on anyone), because they seem so quick to dismiss as irrelevant, so quick to say get rid of the thyroid and so quick to be flippant about our quality of life. Hope you are feeling better. Cheers Caroline Kari Sagen wrote: > > >>>>This is the kind of pain I have been having. i don't know what sets it > off, but codeine won't touch it.
