I was told I needed to lose weight before I had resurfacing. I am

real heavy at 5'6 " and 260. I have been losing weight though and

have hit a wall, I'm assuming it's because I cannot exercise much.

I've started swimming recently but still stuck at a 55 lb loss.

Anyway I was wondering if all the m/m resurfacing doctors feel the

same or is this just Dr. Sparling. He said surgery is much harder

(for him )He didn't say it wouldn't be successful for me.

I have since searched out a wonderful doctor here in Seattle who will

do Ceramic/poly resurfacing on me (it's the TARA by Biopro not the

one being discussed recently) And yes I know there is a larger

bearing surface of poly, but I've done a lot of homework and feel it

would be a whole lot better than metal/poly. I have even talked to

Dr. Townley the inventor who is 85 years old now and still a

very active Doctor. I could also choose ceramic/poly THR with the

same doctor or I've talked to beth and ine in great depth

about ceramic/ceramic with Dr. Swanson. He sounds wonderful but I

would prefer resurfacing if possible and I now know my bones are in

good enough shape for it.

Is there anyone out there who is real heavy and has received the m/m

resurfacing? Thanks

Barb

Hi Barb

I'm not extremely heavy at 6 ft 185lbs but I did consult extensively with a

OS locally who was running a ceramic/ceramic version of the THR for FDA

approval. He would not recommend me for the study due to the problems they

were having with the ceramic devices under weight stress, in fact he nudged

me toward the MOM devices which resulted in my research and eventual settling

for a MOM device (cormac 2000) in Baltimor Ma with Dr s. If he

was concerned with the weight impact either by simply weight bearing in the

normal course of living, or the fact that at 185 or 190 combined with high

activity levels the ceramics were not standing up, was never made clear--but

I would be very careful in making choices on the ceramics due to these

questions. I'm not sure that a lot of weight at daily impact or a lessor

weight at active impact is all that much different. Bottom line is there is

a problem. Poly stuff--they are a proven problem even though FDA annointed

them. Personally I would (actually I did )continue to consult with

Orthopedic surgeons who perform the MOM resurfacings. Most of all listen to

the people on this site who have MOM devices, many of them are extremely

knowledgeable, Hang in there, don't make a quick decision based on pain

(I've been there too) You will be miles ahead and hopefully with no revision

in your future. Best of Luck---Sheff

Barb,

That would be me....Dr. Boyd in Salem did both my resurfacings. I'm sure

they were harder for him than if I were lighter, but like you, I couldn't

get any more weight off. It is finally starting to come off now as I get

more and more active.

If it were me, I would SO avoid poly in any form. Extra weight is

definitely a contra-indication for poly liners IMHO.

Hi,

The first person I heard of having a Resurface m/m around here is very very

overweight - don't know the exact weight but he is BIG. Local specialists

refused to do anything about his hip hassles via the tradition THR saying

he was too heavy to consider.....so he went off and had a BHR done a long

way from home. He is very happy with the results and is lining up for the

other hip soon. From discussions with him and his wife weight made very

little difference to the proceeding.

5'11 " / 270 here. When I consulted with Dr. Stachniw(Galesburg, IL),

I asked point blank about the weight. He said it wasn't a problem.

After surgery, he told me he had to use a longer than normal incision.

His words were something like this: you know, you're a big guy and I

needed to make the incision bigger to do my job.

It isn't a problem for me. If someone notices and comments, I'll use

it as an opportunity to promote the resurfacing option.

Good luck...

I'm not heavy, but I would consider that higher weight will lead to more

debris from the poly, causing faster failure and the ceramic just won't be

as high impact as metal. McMinn told me that a stumble sends up to 9 times

the body weight into the ball of the femur, so that would be well over a

ton of force in your case. New ceramics are supposed to be pretty tough,

but I just wasn't sold on them. Since I'm very active, MOM (metal on metal)

which has a good track record for such impact was the way to go. FWIW I do

martial arts and routinely get lobbed head over heels and bounced off the

floor with no ill effect on the hip. MOM are tough implants and I'm very

happy with mine.

Finally, there has been a lot of attention given to studies that show that

people who are significantly above average body weight have a much greater

risk of getting OA in load bearing joints, so I think that " lose weight "

has become a bit of a mantra for most osteopaths.

Cheers,

Jeff

Hey Jeff

Few quick questions if you have a moment. Did you do any specific exercises

prior to getting back into martial arts?? How did you prepare for the

" breakfalls " or did you do anything special. Have you modified them to

accomodate the implant or just goforit based on prior training?? I'm 7

months out and am going to get back involved but want to make the most

informed decision possible reference when, how hard and if necessary which

system. Talked with and Tes Duck, got great info. on the fact that it

is possible and have increased streaching, hyungs, and full power pool

workouts. But I'm still being really whyimpie about high kicks and

breakfalls, I seem to have a fear of breaking something and starting all

over.. Any info is greatly appreciated---thanks--Sheff
