Guest guest Posted March 14, 2000 Report Share Posted March 14, 2000 Has anyone in the group ever had a colonoscopy? I am scheduled for one in April and am I terrified. My abdomen feels bloated and just plain miserable much of the time. I wonder if it can be from Imuran and Prednisone. I heard that the stuff you have to drink is awful and I wonder if there is any tricks to getting through it easier? Welcome to all of the new members. This group has been a god send. Help! When I had it a few years ago, I had to drink ALOT of awful stuff. He only had to drink stuff in a glass of juice the night before and take four lax and then drink the other half in juice in am. He was on a 48 hr prep and was on liquids for 48 hrs before. He wa hungry but not in any pain or misery. I think things have changed since I had mine or it was the way his doctor did it. Good Luck. I flavored the drinking stuff with some lemonade crystal lite. That was what the pharmacist told me to do. That was better then drinking it straight. I had a colonoscopy and an EGD (sp). They put me out so I whizzed right through. Don't even have a sore throat this morning. I came out good too. Just a few minor (very minor) problems. Nothing that should make me hurt the way I do. I too wonder if the medications are not playing some fun and games here. You don'tfeel a thing as you usually get Versid or a med that puts you to sleep and you won't remember a thing when you awaken. The prep I used was GOLYTLY and it was not too bad - compared to casstor oil. It just taste real salty. They say drink it cold but I found that if I drank it warm it was easier to tolerate. She did have to drink a lot of fluid the day before on ashceduldbasis. When in the srgry rom tey gae her sedatin adaltough she was quite talkative, it was reported tha most people are usually in atwilight seep when te scope is done and oten do not eve remember it. As i said se was awake--theysowed the whole procedure on tv, and she did no sem to be in any discomfort. tat s e good news. wWhen started bleding internally i alsmot had t have aother colonoscopy last mnth (fortunately theleeding stoppd upon subsequent testing). A couple f times ago while in the hospitl when i again had been bledng internally and the dotors were playing " go fish " had anothe scope. However becaue of my comprmized breathing and healthstatus (a the time i wa very ill andon a vent) thy did not give me all th sedation i would have preferred and t be pefectlyhonest it wasno joy ride. Hweve i tldmy GI doc tat if eis a next tmehe WIL knock me out and he agreed. owever o behonest he ws srprized tht he had not te oter ime but again i waso compromied at he time. It is veryimportant to everyone tohave rgulr colon screening and th colonoscopy is the wa o d it mos effectively. It can detect cancersandabnomalitiesthano other test cn do. So it is a necessarytes sometmes. Love Aisha -- colonoscopy ok...so Monday morning is the date...930 is the time....I dont like getting put to sleep, hate iv's (even though I should be used to them), and am afraid of some complication (perforation of bowel)..I know I know.. extremely unlikely....I just get so nervous and think the worst!...so Sunday night I start the fun prep.....I should be back sometime early afternoon on Monday.........wish me luck!!!! Guest guest Posted September 13, 2003 Report Share Posted September 13, 2003 have positive markers....its the isca igg antibody...but negative on an upper gi and negative on colonoscopy and endoscopy....so they are saying that the blood is false negative....my blood also shows high positive highly for celiac disease....but had small bowel biopsy (only sure way of getting result---negative)...is remicade thalidamide??.....right now they are trying the pred which i feel nothing from....and the mercaptapurine...if that doesnt work, then they mentioned the stronger medications....... Guest guest Posted September 16, 2003 Report Share Posted September 16, 2003 Aish: The only sure way test for celiac is through a small bowel biopsy through endoscopy which I did last month and it was negative. There is such a thing as false positive. I also have a false positive lyme titer and when they did the western blot it was neg...the anti-gliadin for celiac which is positive.....was positive...but there are two other stronger markers in your blood called anti-endomysial antibody & transglutaminase these were both negative....this information........especially since the actual small bowel was actually negative proves that there is a false positive and any doctor that tells you that people with autoimmune diseases cannot have all sorts of falso positives of all thes immune disorders are wrong.....................Love, Stace Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted September 16, 2003 Report Share Posted September 16, 2003 why did you stop after a year, what side effects did you feel, and how soon after starting the drug did you first start experiencing your side effects?.............the crohns disease was also a false positive....also negative by biopsy.....all these things are off b/c our immune system is off......sorry, but your dr is wrong with this info.....you can research it or ask any other well versed dr as far as an autoimmmune patient is concernend. I think the issue would be anything that would allow mercury to redistribute, and the liver is not involved with a colonoscopy. I personally would go ahead and have it done. I did the onibasu search (those particular keywords hadn't occured to me) and found that Andy actually recommends vitamin C (through IV drip, if possible) around surgery, so I assume it does not have blood-thinning effects. He did say something about not chelating the weekend before surgery on a Thursday (if I remember correctly). I found no recommendations for how soon to start after. There are a couple of reasons why I say this. My husband had a colonoscopy and a polyp removed. He felt lousy for some time after. Many years ago I had a barium enema because of bleeding. After I was in very poor condition for some time (throwing up at night and major fatigue). Looking back I think that cleaning my system out led to electrolyte imbalance. I just didn't realize it at the time. Of course you may not have this problem, but that is why I say 'when you feel better'. It took me a long time to recover from that 'minor' procedure.
