I chose to become a demonstrator for a rubber stamp company called " Stampin' UP! " I love it!!! I scrapbook and make cards with these stamp sets. Women love it!! Guest guest Posted April 23, 2002 Report Share Posted April 23, 2002 Hi , When my oldest daughter was 3 I made the decision to stop working (daycare & work-related expenses were equalling my paycheck every week) For quite awhile I did well doing daycare myself. I took in several children whose parents I had worked with before so my daughter had playmates and I made more money in the long run. I also did a paper route for extra money (this is only a good option if you're a morning person but I cleared about $10/hour for 14 hours work a week). Right now to supplement our income I do mystery shopping and merchandising as an independent contractor for a couple of companies, and I can bring my kids on most mystery shopping assignments. The thing I've found is that when I had the time to focus on it, there were a ton of ways for us to save money if we just had the time. (The classic example is cooking vs. eating out or eating convenience foods) I do couponing, refunds, bulk shopping and cooking stuff like that. I save a lot of money just by having the time to be a more educated consumer, so in the end that's like another paycheck itself. (I'm by no means a cheap-living fanatic, but I am very wise about where my money is going.) I am pursuing a degree in illustration right now, and as soon as I am able I intend to scrap the side stuff and focus on illustration which of course is a home-based career for most illustrators. There are a ton of resources for stay-at-home/work-at-home online, as well as frugal living websites. Think about what interests you enough to keep you focused when you don't have a supervisor breathing down your neck and see where you can go from there! Best wishes! Those lists can really help you. I am on Creativebudget and frugalfriends but there is also frugalmoms and quite a few others that might help you cut cost. I know I have managed to cut my grocery bill a lot. On Monday I got $97 worth of groceries for $27 ... Rasley mailto:drasley@... Guest guest Posted April 23, 2002 Report Share Posted April 23, 2002 There is that Just for Moms group and they sell household products from home, I do it even though I still work jsut for the extra cash, I dont' make much, about 200$ per month but some of the women that I know that do it have built themselves quite a little business with no investment and are living on that income. It will bring up several groups to help you save money. or if you search for creativebudget it should take you directly to that group so you can join. Here is how I explained it at Creativebudget: I can tell you how I got my $97 for $27 yesterday. I compulsively cut coupons. Everything and anything including items we normally don't use. The reason is even though I normally wouldn't buy frozen dinners because of cost, if they go on sale, they can be a really good buy and provide a meal. I also join the grocery store card club or whatever. I have a Giant Eagle card, a CVS card, and will probably pick up a few more along the way. These cards don't cost anything but enable you to purchase things at sale price. Now Giant Eagle did a buy one get two free sale. So I sat down with the ad and went through my coupons. I looked at the b1g2 and compared them to coupons I had. I had lunchable coupons good for 50 cents off one. Giant Eagle doubles coupons up to a face value of 99 cents so my 50 cent coupon became good for $1 off. Lunchables for 3 for $1.77. With one coupon I could get 3 for 77 cents but I had three coupons so I bought 6 lunchables and paid I believe 54 cents total for all 6 lunchable dessert packs. I figured they would be good for when I am out running around this summer or if we go to a park for a picnic or such. I just did that with every thing that was on sale that would make sense for me to buy be it groceries, cleaners or such. It is amazine how quickly things can add up when you are shopping sales with coupons. Now if something is on sale but we won't use it (right now I have a bunch of fresh produce in the fridge so regardless of how good a sale it is, I won't be buying fresh peppers or tomatoes for a while. I joined the creative budget group, and am going to look into the secret shopper thing. I have a BA in Art (watercolors) and a Graphic Design Diploma, I just don't know what to do with them to make a living. I guess it's a confidence thing. Being fat for so long - I still don't feel comfortable in dealing with people and having confidence in myself. There's a new me outside, but inside takes longer I think. Guest guest Posted April 24, 2002 Report Share Posted April 24, 2002 , A few other things I've done with my art training: several months before Christmas I put ads in local papers for portrait services, advertising them as a wonderful one-of-a-kind gift, usually I work from a photo (though I really would rather work from life!) and I work in pastels, NO MORE OILS---ACK! ; where I live there is a large antique industry and I work with a local dealer painting landscapes & seascapes on furniture; What kind of alum association does your former school have? Several of my teachers have recommended me for freelance design work to local business trying to get work done cheaper than hiring a professional, and it worked to help me build my own portfolio (that was at my community college, RISD's alum association is a great deal more extensive and offers everything from free workshops on how to stay motivated as an artist, to contract law, and those are always really informative). I have given drawing lessons privately as well, and last but not least, (this works great if you have a lot of local scenery to paint, and a tourism industry, which I did when I lived near Mt. Katahdin), you can take some of your paintings, frame them and bring them to local cafes, etc, and ask if you can hang them, business card attached, and you'll let them have a 10% commission if you make a sale. Sometimes you won't sell a lot of the stuff, but people might get inspired and take a business card for when they need something, it's a great word of mouth. If you're leaning more towards graphic design, contacting local non-profits and offering to do volunteer design work is a GREAT way to create goodwill while getting exposure nnd building a portfolio (rotary clubs are a GREAT source for this type of stuff because they are groups of businesspeople, and when it comes time for them to hire a designer, they'll remember you did such a nice job on this poster, or that invitation, etc). Ooh, forgot about one job I did a few years ago that was watercolor! A local chamber of commerce hired me to do a map of the town with little watercolor representations of local buildings...these types of maps are all the rage! It was time consuming but I got a lot of calls from it (unfortunately it was right when I was starting at a new school and didn't have the time to do any more of those) come to think of it, I should call some of those people now that I'm on hiatus from school. Sorry, I have a one track mind, it's just that track tends to zigzag all over the place LOL. Good luck with the confidence thing...I know exactly what you're talking about. F. Some things I have considered are : Taking care of other children At home medical billing (I hear there is a market for it) Transcription (medical) And possibly making things (like sewing) and selling them on ebay or starting up a web page based little thing to sell things.
