when I don't understand...

Hi,

When I don't understand what my kids are saying, what is the best way to

try to get them to repeat themselves? I've tried not to say I don't

understand, but it's hard to think of something else to say. Sometimes

asking them to repeat themselves sets them off, but I don't know what else

to do! I try repeating what it sounded like back to them (with a question

mark at the end), and my daughter just repeats what i said, my son says

" yes " . This gets me nowhere.

Need to vent a little too. I talked to their speech therapist today (on

vacation). She does not think they have apraxia. She thinks the only

method of treatment for apraxia is the Prompt method, and said my kids

would not be able to handle it (she's right, they're much too tactile

defensive!). So I told her about the Kaufman seminar on the 17th and she

seemed interested in going with me. Maybe I won't need to switch

therapists after all!

Then I went to " The Talking Page " , the recordings of kids with apraxia

speaking. My kids sound like this. VERY much like this. It was almost

like i was listening to tapes of 2 of my children talking when listening to

the recording about their age - a couple even sounded better than my kids

do. And I'm thinking to myself, " how in the world can she say there is no

way my kids have apraxia? " . Is it just that she had been exposed to very

severe cases in the past?

Maybe she'll learn something at the seminar and realize this is what we are

dealing with. Or maybe I'll learn we aren't.
