Guest guest
Deb - Congratulations! You may be feeling scared right now, but in a few weeks you'll be feeling great. I go back to Baltimore on the 30th for my 6-week checkup as does Betty Peaco (bubbles). We're staying at the Crossed Keys the night before and meeting for dinner. Are you going to be there? You could join us - we'll be easy to tell, the two ladies on crutches having dinner togther (lol)!! (Plus one husband, hers, mine is staying home this time). It should be quite a site. About the nausea - I think either you get it or you don't. It's less likely with regional (spinal) anesthesia than general, but I think my nausea was related to the pain killers (I seem to be sensitive to anything related too closely to morphine). The thing that's hard is, what works for one person, may make another sick - there's no rule about it. The nurses at Sinai were really great - switching pain meds and anti-nausea treatments (dromperidone (sp?) was the magic bullet for me), so you just have to go into it with faith that people know what they're doing. A lot of people on this site have no nausea at all afterwards! Gigi

Guest guest
Anne and I arrived home from Baltimore yesterday, after her surgery with Dr. Mont last Friday the 26th. She's doing very well--with a metal-on-metal THR instead of a resurfacing, unfortunately. Dr. Mont said that while the femoral side was okay, he was unable to get a good press fit with the acetabular component, due to deformity related to her congenital condition (dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica) and bone cysts. So he had to use screws--and the C+ doesn't have an acetabular component that allows the use of screws. As far as I know, only the BHR has an acetabular component that takes even one screw, and Dr. Mont needed two in order to get good fixation in Anne's case. We got to meet Kathy from this group as she was waiting for her surgery on Thursday, and she was doing great by the time she left. Anne had a tough first couple of days, but after getting of the morphine, which was making her sick, and getting a couple of pints of blood, she was much perkier. By the time she was discharged Tuesday, she was moving around on crutches. We spent Tuesday night at the hotel, then drove home yesterday. Our Mazda MPV minivan has a feature where the front and middle seat combine to make a sort of recliner. It was very comfortable for her, and we made the 400 mile trip in 7 1/2 hours. So, as a friend said (paraphrasing Mick Jagger), sometimes you may not get what you want, but you get what you need. Anne really wanted the resurf, and was initially disappointed with the THR, but she can see improved range of motion already and continues to improve every day. With the metal-on-metal joint, we hope that this could be the only one she ever needs. Take care everyone, Jim

She's doing very well--with a > metal-on-metal THR instead of a resurfacing, Please pass this info to Anne, Jim: On May 20 I came out of surgery performed by Dr Mont with a m-o-m THR instead of the resurfacing. Like Anne, I was initially quite disappointed. One thing which helped me immediately was knowing that if ANYONE could have made a resurfacing work for me it was Dr Mont and that if he put in a m-o-m THR it was because that was the ONLY option. The second thing was hearing Dr Mont tell me that I could do anything I wanted--including skiing--after 6 months. As he told me, " ...I have people running marathons on the device you have... " Lastly, now that I am 10 weeks post-op, I can tell you first-hand that I am FAR from disappointed in the m-o-m THR. On the contrary, I believe I am equal to or functioning better than most resurfacing patients at a similar point in their recovery. I am walking without a cane, my limp is almost imperceptible, I have inadvertently violated every single hip restriction they have given me and not had a " twinge " , my range-of-motion on the operated hip is better than my " normal " unoperated hip, and I move around most of the time without even realizing that I have an artificial joint!! I won't lie and say that I would not prefer to have had the resurfacing, but everything I have done and felt so far makes me believe the m-o-m hip from Dr Mont is everything he said it was. I also believe that Dr Mont's surgical skills have a LOT to do with the success of my recovery. Hang in there Anne, weeks 1-6 are long and have their ups and downs. After the soft tissue has pretty much healed during weeks 6-10, you will not believe the progress you can make and the lack of pain. After all a m-o-m THR is far preferable, in my opinion, than a traditional poly-metal THR...I think within 10 weeks, you will be as happy with your new hip, as I am!! Best of luck and do that physical therapy...its critical!! DENNY M
Guest guest
Denny and Anne, are the MOM THRs you received the large ball type? (I think it is, as Dr. Schmalzreid showed me one.)If so, that is an indication of why it works similarly to the resurface MOM, as they both would have little chance of dislocation and the only differences would be the bone saving and load distribution differences. I am glad you are doing well; any of us could face a revision and it is nice to know there is an effective alternative. Guest guest
Hi Denny! That is so reassuring to hear you rave about the THR. I am scheduled to have my right hip resurfaced with Dr. Mont on September 9th and I've been a bit nervous about not being able to have it done. It's really nice to hear that the THR is not the end of the world and while it is my first choice (I would most likely require future revisions since I'm only 27 years old) I know that no matter how it turns out I will be much better off than the constant pain I'm in now. I wish for you more blessings in your wonderful recovery.
