I thought it somewhat amusing that Dr

Dattoli, the author, offers to do all the complex pathology tests to his

patients – no using a specialist pathologist while he has an ‘in

house’ one.

He has still not sent me the studies to

which his marketing manager referred when she said that “<snip>

Studies indicate that the younger a man is when diagnosed, the higher the

chances are of his cancer being aggressive. <snip> I believe there are no

such studies.

His objections to ‘marketing’

are rather hollow given the misleading information on his site.

All the best

This is one of those things that " stands to reason " , as the

saying goes. If cancer develops very slowly, it would seem

likely that it only gets big enough to be detected when the

patient is old. If it's developing quickly, it might be detected

much earlier. Hence the guy who is diagnosed earlier has, on

average, the faster growing cancer.

But of course that's not science. There are lots of things that

sound reasonable but turn out to be false.

So I'm with you on this. I want to see the studies.

Chuck, a friend of mine on Long Island ran into exactly this situation. When his PSA hit 5.9 his GP sent him to a urologist. A biopsy showed two positive cores, and the urologist recommended radiation therapy and sent him to a radiation center. During a discussion with the doctor at the center he asked how she knew the urologist and was told the urologist was a part owner of the center. At that point my friend opted for a second opinion and got one from Sloan Kettering, which recommended active surveillance. Six months later, when the PSA had continued to rise and the number of positive cores in a follow up biopsy had doubled, he opted for surgery at Sloan Kettering.
