Hi... its a friend of a friend from church. The little boy is 2 years

old w/ bilateral CF, and they DESPERATELY want to avoid surgery. I

have only been given sketchy details on his treatment thus far, but

will get more info soon. They want to know if it is too late, etc...

Please give me any info on any docs that would be appropriate, and I

may be calling Pappa Ponseti tonight anyway on a 'unrelated' topic to

this. Thanks!

There is a fellow at the Shriner's hospital there, first name Vish, I

can't remember his last name but the Cast Lady will know. He was a

resident at Vanderbilt when I was a fellow and was recently at the

Ponseti seminar. That's who I would try.

Tina,

As Beth indicated, the doctor from the Lexington, Kentucky Shriners

that was at the Ponseti method training clinic is

Dr. Vishwas R. Talwalkar

Shriners Hospital for Children

1900 Richmond Rd.

Lexington, KY 40502

http://www.shrinershq.org/shc/lexington/index.html

From what I understand, the initial Ponseti method will probably not

work for a child that is now 2 years old, because the ligaments and

tendons have lost most of the flexibility they had as a baby. But it

is possible that Dr. Ponseti may be able to do something that will

avoid the major surgery but that may involve the anterior tibial

tendon transfer. I assume that all of this would depend on the

severity and prior treatment. It is possible that to try to use the

relapsing portions of the Ponseti method for an older child, that it

might be best to go to Iowa.

It is possible that Dr. Talwalker has been using the initial portion

of the Ponseti method with success, but he may not yet have tried to

use it on a relapsing or older child. But I would assume that he has

eperience in dealing with relapses in older children, although from a

traditional method until recently.

To my sweet helpful friends: The cast lady & Doc , :o)

THANKS SOOOOOOO MUCH for jumping on this so quickly! I called my

friend and she is ecstatic and wants more info to get to her sister

and brother in law. Would I be asking too much to get a phone number

for the doc and the address of the hospital? Sure would be very

appreciative of your time and help. Thanks in advance and again thank

you both SO much for ALL you donate to this board and clubfoot kiddos

like MINE! Sending (((((((HUGS)))))))!

Dear ,

Hi there friend! Thanks for your post, and wisdom (as usual). I will

tell them that Iowa would be their best bet and have already suggested

that they call Dr. P. yesterday. Will keep you updated on the

progress and outcome. Hey... did you and Allyson read 'our' news... 3

weeks before hubby's SCHEDULED 'snip snip procedure'... we find out I

am PREGNANT! We are shocked, but feeling blessed and that our LORD

has a special mission for this 7th baby of ours! The twins JUST

turned 6 mos. old on Christmas day and our oldest daughter will be 10

years old tomorrow. So... our ages when the baby is born will be:

10, 9, 6, 5, 1 year old TWINS, and our newborn! And that is if it is

a singleton... our twins were natural, not fertility meds.. so our

risks of multiples (either twins or triplets, our perinatologist

said!) are much higher. Time will tell! Hope all is well w/ you,

Allyson and your crew. Blessed 2001 friend.. thanks for ALL you do

here!

Fondly,

Tina and Kavan

Tina,

Congratulations on the coming arrival. And I thought that 6 kids

with 6 month old twins would have been tiring. Although Allyson and

I have six children, I think that I am too old and worn out. We hope

that things go well and that your twins grow up real fast in the next

9 months.

Keep us informed on how things are working out for your friends

child.

Tina I have the # for Vish it is 1-. As reminded

you the Ponseti treatment is probably not ideal here but most

physicians are willing to try conservative treatment first. not

knowing any particulars about your friends 2 year old I thinck he just

needs to find a good Dr. who can evaluate the situation. Shriners

deals with alot of clubfeet also and Dr.Talwalkar seems to be nice.

While in Iowa this past summer on one of our trips we met a family that had

brought their little one to Dr. Ponseti, he was 2 years old. He had

treatment for bilateral clubfeet from birth, they knew of Dr. Ponseti but

had no way of getting to him from the start. Finally thanks to Angel Flights

they were able to go to Iowa but as I mentioned he was now two years old.

Dr. Ponseti performed the tendon transfer on his feet and the mom told me it

was a great success for her son. His feet were not perfect, but the shoes

would not work for him because complete correction was never accomplished by

his old doctor back home. They were back for a check up at that time and

this little boy was running all over the place and doing just wonderfully! I

had never met anyone who had to have the tendon transfer before and to see

this little boy was very encourageing for children that are past the point

of help from casting and manipulations alone.
