Guest guest
folic acid , folic acid is a nutrient that is produced and stored in the liver. It helps B12 absorbed to what is called and intrinsic factor in the stomach. Without this binding process B12 can not be absorbed. This causes pernious anemia. Metho. can cause the liver to deplete its very small reserve of folic acid. Most normally healthy people can obtain enough folic acid from their diets. Those on certain meds. deplete their reserves or it can not bind correctly. Thus the need to supplement it . Hope this helps.

Guest guest
I went to my GYN today for my annual exam and planning for pregnancy later on in the year if all continues to go well. She said I should take 4 mg of folic acid rater than the usual 1 mg because I'm diabetic. My multivitamin lists 400 mcg--anyone know how that compares? Any reaosn I should worry about taking too much and not just add the 4 mg? I'm super-proximal (less than 6 " bypassed)--do I need any extra for malabsorption? Tons of questions today! --Darla
Guest guest
Hi Darla, 4 mg seem quite a bit but then again I'm not an OB. You may want to ask your OB if you can get a Rx for that amount so that way you wont try to get it by increasing multi's and prenatals to get that amount. I take about 1.4mg a day. O edd 5-24-02 Baby Girl!!! Folic Acid I went to my GYN today for my annual exam and planning for pregnancy later on in the year if all continues to go well. Guest guest
I got the answer to this at a supplement store. There are 1,000 mcg in 1 g (that brilliant metric system). So I need to take 3,600 mcg plus the 400 mcg in my multivitamin. The only way to do this without taking a handfull of pills (sriously--like 8!) is to get a prescription from my doc, so that's what I'm doing. Thanks for the responses! -Darla P.S. Yes, 4 mg *is* an awful lot--it's because I'm diabetic, and diabetics need more to protect against defects. My OB/GYN says she prescribes 1 mg to nondiabetics. > I went to my GYN today for my annual exam and planning for pregnancy > later on in the year if all continues to go well. Guest guest
how long do we have to take this amount of folic acid? Through the entire pregnancy or just the first few months while the baby is forming. Sandi Re: Folic Acid I got the answer to this at a supplement store. Guest guest
I take my prenatal plus 3 extra grams of folic acid - total of about 4 grams throughout the pregnancy They are tiny little pills. No biggie Re: Folic Acid I got the answer to this at a supplement store. There are 1,000 mcg in 1 g (that brilliant metric system). So I need to take 3,600 mcg plus the 400 mcg in my multivitamin. Guest guest
I'm in the prep stages so I'm not sure. I'm supposed to start on it now to get ready to TTC in June or July, depending on how other things go. (I'm almost 1 year post-op but my BGs are still a little high.) If I remember right from my first pregnancy (which I miscarried just days after hearing the heartbeat), it's most important for the months before conception and the first few months of the pregnancy. That's my guess anyway--check with your doctor. --Darla > how long do we have to take this amount of folic acid?
