This is a can of worms indeed. One the one hand far too many men with insignificant or minimal disease have been drawn into unnecessary and damaging treatments on the basis of PSA testing. It is probably how the results from PSA testing are presented, and by whom, with what motive, that determines what a man does.  If a man is ill-informed and has not taken charge of knowledge about his body, then he is more likely to be swayed by bad advice motivated by commercial interest masquerading as 'clinical science'.

On the other hand PSA testing can still be a life saver for those few men who need to make effective treatment decisions. Not just PSA, but PSADT  (doubling time) or PSAV (velocity) free/total PSA ratio can be a starting point for building a picture of what is happening to the prostate and where it is likely to be going. Add in hormone testing for testosterone and DHT, estrogen and SHBG and a truly informed and empowered man could begin to make lifestyle changes bypassing the need for surgery or chemical castration.

At a time when medical costs are skyrocketing, and where the all-time-risk of cancer is actually increasing, it just does not make sense to remain ignorant of the cause of prostate cancer & its potential triggers and promoters. Sam.
