The only difficulty I had, which I coped with, was handling my baggage on a bus-ride from Birmingham to Heathrow Airport. If you are in reasonably good physical shape, you will probably manage just fine. The one thing to keep in mind is will you manage all your stuff if there is no-one there to help you. Getting on and off the train could be a little difficult too. I'm not sure what the steps are like, but I imagine, again, if there is someone to help you with your bags, it should be fine. Guest guest
With all the posting lately about help needed with different things, comfort, etc., I am wondering if I am being realistic planning to go to Europe and back by myself. I was going to go to fort area for a few days, then go do the operation in Belgium, staying at the Holiday Inn for X number of days, then go to Delft in Belgium where a friend lives whose wife is a nurse. After a week or so there, I would go to NY and stay with my mother-in- law for a week more before heading back to CA. I think I can manage to get to Delft ok, it is about a 2 hour train ride from Brussels to Rotterdam. Anything I should be really concerned about if I am alone? Thanks, Isara
Guest guest
Hi, Isara I was thinking of doing the same thing. When I mentioned this to Dr. de Smet, he said that he wouldn't recommend it. For one thing, if you are alone he would want you to stay in the hospital much longer. After taking that and other things into consideration, I decided that it would be much better to take a family member with me and will be accompanied by my son and my mother. I'm hoping that I'll feel well enough to join them in some sightseeing. I think you said you are scheduled for July 3rd, which is the day after me. So we will be around if you do come alone and we can help you with anything. Marie Y.
Guest guest
Hi Isara, I see you are from beautiful Ventura. My brother, Cyrus, lives in Camarillo so I know your neighborhood. We're going to have a good time in Ghent! I understand that Dr. DeSmet is a great guy. I 'll probably be there the longest since I am having both hips done. I have a very young and cool mom coming so she will be of great help to us all (she's also a medical person). Regards, Saeed
Guest guest
Well, Marie, that is very kind of you. I do have two daughters who want to come, but neither have passports, so we will see if they can put that together. As for the hospital stay, I maybe could stay a couple of days longer and then come out if you are still around. It surely will be nice to have you and Saeed both around at the same time. Guest guest
Sorry Isara, you're not gonna make it, at least not that way. cus Delft is in the Netherlands, not in Belgium.... In europe with 2 hour driving you easily can cross 5 different countries. So to help you getting realistic: leaving your luggage home? OK, but get yourself a map of europe.....lol Getting Realistic .... then go to Delft in Belgium where a friend lives whose wife is a nurse. .... I think I can manage to get to Delft ok, it is about a 2 hour train ride ....
Guest guest
, I looked at the map, and checked the trains... they do go from Brussels to Rotterdam, seems like a straight line from Belgium to Netherlands...... Isara Where do you live, ? > Sorry Isara, > you're not gonna make it, at least not that way. > cus Delft is in the Netherlands, not in Belgium.... > In europe with 2 hour driving you easily can cross 5 different countries. > So to help you getting realistic: leaving your luggage home? Guest guest
HI DES - HI ISARA Just a few words for anyone coming to the UK for any hip operation. If you think you'll need help getting on or off a train mention it at the ticket office. Help willl be organised at your destination station as well. If your in a wheel chair a ramp will be available at both departure and destination points. Before I had BHR on both hips I had use of this service on a number of occassions - help with baggage as well -excellent.
