Guest guest
Dear Joy, All the best for your appointment with Dr Raghu. It's amazing for me to hear of you lot in the USA going off to see these people whose research work I've been studying up on the Web. I'll be watching for your post to see how it all went. I've actually made an appointment to see my local Respiratory Physician to tell him I won't be requiring treatment with Prednisone. I'm going to go 'Cold Turkey' & see what happens! I rang at the beginning of December & can't get in until March 12th...the young girl on the desk asked 'is it urgent' & I said NOPE! I'd reckon by then he'll have twigged that I'm not going to go down that path. Regards, in Oz IPF: Fibrotic NSIP/UIP??????? Guest guest
, Just a little warning, don't quit prednisone cold turkey without your Dr. knowing it. I went from 60 to 40 and nearly wound up in the hospital. I don't know what dosage your on but it can be pretty ugly.  Yes I missed you I just thought you were out Kangaroo riding or something.  LOL  Call your Dr. PleaseLove and Prayers, Peggy  ipf 6/04 Florida"Worry looks around, Sorry looks back, Faith looks up." Guest guest
, I always say "This is Randel, I am a terminal patient of Dr. Desai and it is very important that I make an appointment this week" AND they always get me in right away! If they ask if it's urgent you say, I think when it's terminal everything is urgent! It helps if you add a sob or two to your voice. It is the ONLY time I use the "T" word. March is too late especially if you are going to go cold turkey with the pred. Take care- Sarcoid/PF 3/2006 California Re: Prednisone... Dear Joy, All the best for your appointment with Dr Raghu. Guest guest
Don't worry Peggy, I'm not on it & do not intend to be...by Cold Turkey I meant going WITHOUT it right from the start! Doing the IPF thing in Cold Turkey! I'm very grateful for the way everyone openly shares their medical experience on this Board. Nobody individually has influenced my decision & it's based largely on my knowledge of my own family's mental health history. I've spent my entire life staying on an even keel (in spite of what Mr Bruce would have you believe...lol!) & my entire life dealing with other members of my family in a dire situation due to mental health problems (Mother, Brothers, Aunts, 1st Cousins).....serious bipolar disorder is a hard road & I'm not going to take the risk of setting off any such thing for myself. My FEAR of Prednisone is far far greater than my fear of dying of PF! It's as Simple as that really! To those that advocate 'try it & see' have no idea that even one episode of a Mood Swing would be more than I could cope with! Thanks for you concern sweet Peggy, you're always on the look-out for us! love, in Oz > >> > I'm on the list of "I hate Prednisone", and I'd rather die than go > around with basketball head, and football players neck..etc. I was > miserable on it, and figured I'd be miserable off it, but not...feel > much better now that I'm free of that stuff.> >> > Tomorrow I have my big doc appt with Dr. Raghu at U of W. Guest guest
Mine is based on verification of IPF and not another form and my own history of mental illness. The point is that we all have many life choices and decisions to make during our time with the disease. There is no right or wrong, just what we're personally most comfortable with. Some doctors overlook the fact that we have choices to make and think the choices are theirs. I would also advise if you're going to take prednisone or any medication known for mood affectation then inform someone who is around you regularly of what to look for. They may detect serious issues before you do. We all react to every medication differently. > > > > > > I'm on the list of " I hate Prednisone " , and I'd rather die than go > > around with basketball head, and football players neck..etc. I was > > miserable on it, and figured I'd be miserable off it, but not...feel > > much better now that I'm free of that stuff. > > > > > > Tomorrow I have my big doc appt with Dr. Raghu at U of W. Guest guest
Yes, I was asked by my doctor why I wouldn't use prednisone now but would possibly consider a transplant knowing it would be required. It's that prednisone isn't proven to help significantly with IPF (is proven beneficial with other PF's and some believe some benefit with IPF) and I felt the side effects outweighed the positives. However, after a transplant it is proven necessary and helpful to save your life. To me thats two very different circumstances. > > > > > > I'm on the list of " I hate Prednisone " , and I'd rather die than go > around with basketball head, and football players neck..etc. I was > miserable on it, and figured I'd be miserable off it, but not...feel > much better now that I'm free of that stuff. > > > > > > Tomorrow I have my big doc appt with Dr. Raghu at U of W. Guest guest
That makes perfect sense to me Bruce...personally, I'm not interested in going down the Transplant Path for lots of different reasons. With this disease, MY way, is to allow nature to take its course whatever that means for me...I'm not against medical intervention per se ....I've had surgery for various problems over the years & happily take drugs if they're not too toxic. But I have limits & PF solutions all seem to be beyond MY limits at this point in medical history/treatments available! I'll qualify all that by saying I accept O2 supplementation as that seems to be fairly benign medication although it does give me a sore nose very quickly. Let me also say that I have the greatest respect for everyone on this Board who makes different decisions to mine & fully support their courage in doing so. I WANT their medications to work for them & their transplants to be successful & for The Call to come sooner rather than later! I just WISH that the medico's would broaden their understanding of why some of us don't want to go down the medicated path! Guest guest
WAIT!!!!! Do not go off Prednisone cold turkey anyone!!!!!! Your body has stopped producing certain hormones because of Prednisone and going cold turkey can kill you. Take 2-4 week weaning off time table if you are going to do it. Let your body get up to speed producing those specific hormones and interactions before depriving it of needed resources. There is a reason your doctor wants to monitor you and it is not for fun. Jeff - Salt Lake City RIF, FB 2005 -----Original Message-----From: Breathe-Support [mailto:Breathe-Support ] On Behalf Of Bruce MorelandSent: Thursday, December 27, 2007 10:23 PMTo: Breathe-Support Subject: Re: Prednisone... > > >> > > I'm on the list of "I hate Prednisone", and I'd rather die than go> around with basketball head, and football players neck..etc. I was> miserable on it, and figured I'd be miserable off it, but not...feel> much better now that I'm free of that stuff.> > >> > > Tomorrow I have my big doc appt with Dr. Raghu at U of W. Guest guest
Hi , You have to come down off of the pred slowly. The reason being that usually your body will produce it's own steroid at times of need, but as you have been given some artificially your body has no reason to make any, therefore won't. The only good thing with cold turkey is a couple of slices of bread and butter with salad and chestnut stuffing Love Ze xx> >> > I'm on the list of "I hate Prednisone", and I'd rather die than go > around with basketball head, and football players neck..etc. I was > miserable on it, and figured I'd be miserable off it, but not...feel > much better now that I'm free of that stuff.> >> > Tomorrow I have my big doc appt with Dr. Raghu at U of W. By cold turkey she means going through the disease cold turkey with no meds. She sure did create a lot of concern...lol. ly, I'm worried that I actually understood her. Guest guest
I'd like to second that on the prednisone. It's dangerous to quit cold turkey. You need to be weaned off it slowly. Took me nearly 3 months to get off it. Some folks take longer, depending on the dosage. Always call your Doc for the schedule on lowering the dose. Cold turkey can cause serious problems. Best of luck with it though. I'm so glad I finally got off of it, even if it may only be for these 2 years. Hugs!
