I had open RNY September 19,1999. I have NEVER regretted having my surgery.

I am now a size 4. Well, that was pre-pregnancy. I am 6 months along with my

3rd child (1st chid since surgery) and am loving it. I lost 14 lbs during my

1st trimester and have now gained 4 1/2 lbs back from that. I got pregnant

our very first try so getting pregnant with me was NO problem. Surgery was

the best thing FOR ME. I had a harder time with my c-section 10 years ago

than I did with my recovery from WLS. That is just my story though. Not

everyone has as easy a time as I did. For me, it was one of the best things I

have ever done.

Good luck,

Melody,

I have no regrets at all about having my surgery. Pre-op I was 26 years old,

5'5 " and 260 pounds. I was a Type II diabetic, infertile, and in bad shape.

I didn't realize how bad of shape I was in until I lost the weight.

I had a LAP RNY in August of 2000. I got pregnant while faithfully taking

the pill about 6 months post-op. I have had no problems so far and I feel

great. This is my fourth pregnancy but I have never carried past 16 weeks.

I had 3 previous second trimester miscarriages. I am now 18 weeks and trying

to allow myself to relax and enjoy this pregnancy.

Having the surgery is a highly individual choice. I have never had a

C-section or any other surgery but the pain of this surgery is real. You

honestly do forget how much it hurts.

I remember asking a few post-ops why they didn't warn me about the pain. I

honestly think it is because you forget and you just enjoy the good things

about having the surgery.

I hope that I answered your question.

Melody-

I was pregnant before my surgery and didn't know it and went into the hospital

after my surgery and still didn't know that I was pregnant and had xrays, barium

and endoscopy. I found out that I was pregnant on Father's day and it was

confirmed on my 2 year anniversary the day after. I had a sonogram that week and

believe it or not the baby looked great and my gyny said that everything looked

fine. So this baby has been through a lot and I feel it kicking every day and I

think that everything will be okay.

So, to answer your question, Yes, I feel that you can have a successful

pregnancy after the surgery. =)

Yes I would say you are. You have already made up your mind even though your

doctor has advised you to wait a year and you say you know all the reasons

to wait yet because you want it you are going to go for it. Well if no one

can tell you otherwise why are you writing? Not for advise but why? I dont

know. But I dont think it is smart to purposely go against your doctor's

orders especially since the BPD/DS is so very malabsorptive that you can run

into nutritional difficulties even easier -- for lack of a better word --

than with an RNY. Do you want us to say good for you or go for it? Ummm.. I

am at a loss here.

Charlotte,

I can only tell you my experience. I got pregnant at 10 1/2 months

post op. My surgeon was ok with it because I was only 8 pounds away

from my goal weight which was in medical guidelines. No one can say

yay or nay to you from this group. Ultimately it is your decision.

I would hope everyone here, regardless of our opinion, would support

you in ANY way. I pray you make the right decision for you, your

baby and your family.

Hugs,

Trina

Charlotte,

I got preg planned) 9 mos post op becasue of my age too. I had a peice pf

cake preg and delivery, no probs at al. The only concern I have is that I

didn't get down to my goal weight and now am not losing as easily as I did

b4 preg. That is worse considering. You don't want the surgery not be all

it can for you. LEnore

PS how ols are you and how big a family doyou want? I am 43 with an 18

month old and trying for another.

Charlotte,

In my honest opinion you should really discuss with your weight loss surgeon

and get his/her opinion. Each doc has their own guidelines for waiting to

get pregnant and their reasoning. My doctor's is 2 years and boy did I ever

blow that one. I didn't intentionally set out to get pregnant but so far so

good. I really do wish that I had waited over the 1 year mark before this

precious " accident " had occurred just so that my weight loss could have been

maximized and that I could be getting more nutrition. However with that

being said it happened and I am ecstatic over our soon to be new arrival. I

don't think anyone can say one way or another what you should or shouldn't

do but just realize we are here for you! :)

Hi! I've been kind of lurking around for the past week since i joined.

you've all helped in giving me hope. i've had WLS (open BPD) last 0ct. 30.

i've lost 91 pounds so far, but i do have a long way to go. before having

this surgery, i was experiencing infertility issues probably due to my

weight. my husband and i are VERY ready to try to get pg again. i've been

pg twice, but miscarried once at 10 weeks, and the second time was at 17

weeks with twins. it was very devastating, but my desire to have children

has never dwindled. in fact, now, it is more fierce than ever. i can't

wait

to get pg. i know all of the guidelines say to wait at least a year, but i

don't think i can. i'm getting older, and i want a big family. my husband

and i have discussed next month being my last month of taking lunelle shots.

since it may take awhile for the lunelle to come out of my system, we will

be

using alternate forms of birth control, but i want to seriously try to get

pg

sometime in august since that would also be perfect as a teacher. i also

believe in my heart (but we all know the heart sometimes thinks without the

brain being present) that will be close enough to a year. i think the

problem is no one is going to be able to tell me otherwise. it's just

something i feel i HAVE to do. so am i certifiably crazy???????
