This can be a result of the heart laboring to decrease the CO2 level in the

bloodstream. (Our breathing is triggered by an increase in CO2 ... not a

decrease in O2).

Again, the chest attempting to labor against the obstruction can cause this

problem. Especially if the sleep pattern change was fairly sudden.

The resulting snoring and abrasion of the throat due to the obstruction can

cause this. I know if my obstructive sleep apnea is worse than normal by

the problems with this.

WARNING! Acid reflux can be caused by an obstruction. It gets MUCH worse.

I sometimes awaken to a lung full of acid reflux. This is not safe, and can

result in very serious health problems.

Ditto here. BTW, might indicate an issue with blood sugar ... elevate the

blood sugar and the possibility of skin infection increases.

> Whaddya think?

, please remember, I am in no way a doctor, nor is this any type of

diagnosis. The most important thing you can do is to go see a sleep

specialist. It is VERY likely you have obstructive sleep apnea, which is

very common with MSA. It places a VERY large burden on your body.

Unmanaged, it WILL increase problems with your health. Get it under

control, and some of these issues should lessen. It won't make it go away.

I wish it would. And I sure hope it is something this easy to manage.

Sorry to hear that you're doing poorly. Looking at your list of

woes, I have a few ideas.

1.) Get UTI test strips and check at once for a UTI. Do not wait on

this. You KNOW those can be serious. Your overall symptoms sound

like the result of an infection, so even if the strip is negative,

call your doc.

2.) Salt tablets. Rob takes Thermotabs, 4 a day. You can get them

at CVS, but the pharmacist has to order them. They are NOT a

prescription item. Salt is necessary to make the flourinef

effective, and it's almost impossible to get enough by just ssalting

your food.

3.) Increase the flourinef? You would have to check with your doc,

but Rob takes .3 mg a day at this point.

4.) Are you drinking enough water?

5.) You may be allergic to latex, which may be in the condom cath.

Have you tried Detrol? It works really well for Rob.

6.) On the midrodine, is that 10 mg per day total, or 10 mg each

dose? If it's 10 mg per day total, you might be able to increase

it. Rob takes 10 mg per dose, 2 doses a day for 20 mg total. Also,

when are you taking the midrodine? You shouldn't take it within 6

hours of bedtime. Rob takes his upon waking and again at 4 pm and

this schedule seems to work for him.

7.) Maybe you should cut back on the sinimet. Again, check with

your doc.

Keep us posted , we're worried about you.

I agree wholeheartedly with Fisher's comments. I forgot about

sleep in my earlier response. You should ask about a sleep study.

Have you had a blood chemistry done recently? (Since all this started). Blood

chemistry can get out of hand easily and cause much of what you are describing.

As some of the other's have mentioned there are other possibilities also.

You know MSA - a few fast balls, then a curve. There are also several flu bugs

running around the DC area. Yes, infection is a possibility - blood infections

do

not show in urine samples. The burning could be a UTI.

Final thought - are you getting enough salt. With taking potassium you may be

flushing out more sodium.

Now you have tons of junk to think about :o) Hopefully it is just MSA saying

it's seasonal change time and will go away soon. Maybe it's that long shadow of

the Capital blocking your sunlight. :o) Charlotte has had less energy

recently

also.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte

I'm NOT a doctor but I do have some experience that comes from

taking care of my mom. Here are a few thinkg you can try. I

apologize in advance if they seem simplistic or you have already

considered them.

1. Sinemet - - it helps only some and hurts others. Work closely

with your doctor.

In addition, are you taking your pills with citris juice. See the

Mayo Clinic study referenced below on how citris juices can alter and

magnify the effects of certain drugs.

(headline)GO EASY ON THE GRAPEFRUIT JUICE

Sour citrus interacts badly with common drugs

http://www.healthscout.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Af.woa?ap=1 & id=103640

2. Sleeping - Consider visiting a sleep clinic to get monitored?

3. Dizziness: Are you sleeping with your head elevated? Some

suggest that putting a few bricks under the feet of the head of your

bed will help strengthen your blood pressure over time.

4. Constipation: Have you tried Swiss Kriss tablets before bedtime.

They are natural, primarily senna, very mild, not habit forming and

work much better than prunes etc. You can buy them without

prescription at most healthfood stores and they are much cheaper than

brand name tablets (60 pills for about $6.)

5. Salt tablets. Some people just don't get enough salt through

regular eating. You can buy salt tablets over the counter in most

pharmacies.

Also salt will stimulate thirst and we all know that you need lots of

fluids to keep your blood pressure up (as long as you don't already

ahve high blood pressure.)

Sure you end up urinating more, but the price of falling less should

be worth it.

6. Are you monitoring sugar intake. Sometimes people forget to eat

sugar, like an orange or an apple and that makes them feel week and

dizzy (sugar low.)

7. Fresh air. We found that my mother perks up a lot just by getting

a ride in a wheel chair. We're not sure why but we do know that

staying in bed or in a chair all day is a common reaction to feeling

weak and dizzy but it can make things worse. Can someone take you

out for a wheel chair ride or even a ride in a car with some windows

open?

I hope that some of these tips are helpful. Take care.

Hi :

Don't know if I'll be much help - but here goes. With regards to the 'lump' in

your chest I have a hiatus hernia and I find by laying on my left side with my

head raised and raising my left arm so the elbow is above the shoulder, I can

get

some relief.

As for the constipation I asked the doctor for a stool softener and found it

irritated my bladder so I had symptoms just like you described. I only

discovered

it by accident but since I quit using it about 6-8 months ago, I haven't had any

of that burning urgency and inability to pass the urine. I've always had an

irritable bowel so quite often I find eating something fried or greasy will get

me

going as well as watching diet, but it certainly is a yoyo game between

constipation and running.

I'm usually up every 20-30 minutes from 11pm until 2pm to go to the bathroom and

then every 2-3 hours after that. I also have one nightly bout with 'night

sweats' but I thought for a long time it was a left-over from 11 years of very

extreme hot flashes. I know now that it is just one more reason for SDS to get

you up in the middle of the night. I keep a glass of water or cranberry juice

and

a small fan handy.

As for the w's - If I try to overdo physically, I'll be down for days.

Thanksgiving weekend my boys came down to do some repairs on my house, stayed

over

and on Sunday their wives and children joined them and I made dinner. By the

time

it was over, I was in a big chair watching the others clean up and grabbing a

granchild for a hug whenever one ran by. For the next 3 days, I was on the sofa

watching TV, reading or playing with the computer - no energy for anything. I

used to be a high-energy person and it sure is hard to make yourself slow down,

but it's that or BE down.

Hope I've helped. (Ont. Can.)

I called my OB's office to find out what I can take or do for a VERY

STUFFING NOSE, and I seem to be on hold forever. So, what can I do?

I can't breathe! I was told no to nasal spray and yes to sudafed,

but it's not working at all.

Help!

Tylenol Allergy/Sinus works for me. I was sooooo sick last week and

usually don't take any meds at all -- but my sister (who is also

preg) said she swears by Tylenol Allergy/Sinus so I bought some and

it worked wonders!!!!!

No nasal spray? I have been taking Tylenol Sinus and it doesn't seem

to work. I finally did get in touch with the nurse at my OB's office

and she said plain sudafed. Don't want that, but she did say that

having a stuffy nose is part of being pregnant. Oh whatever! I

can't breathe! There's gotten be relief somewhere, right?

You sound like me! LOL! I've had such terrible nasal

congestion...especially at night, that hubby ends up moving to the couch

because of my AWFUL snoring. :o( My OB's office suggested benadryl. I

take it only when I'm especially stuffy...ya know I just HATE to take much

of anything. They say it's safe...but, I'd rather err on the side of

caution. But, if you can't breathe, ya gotta do something!

I also find that doing the old Vicks Vaporub works wonders, too. I'll boil

a pot of water, scoop a couple spoons of the stuff into it, throw a towel

over my head and breath it all in. Can't stand it in my eyes,

though...gotta keep 'em closed!

I think the lack of humidity is an issue...from running the heater in

winter. I try to boil a couple pots of water each night (when I

remember! ). This seams to help, too.

Good luck!

The pregnancy rhinitis is a real phenomenon... all of your mucus membranes swell

when

you're pg, no matter where they are in your body. I had a stuffed-up nose for

pretty

much my entire pregnancy with Isaac, and nothing helped much (although the

humidifier

was as helpful as anything). Sorry!!!
