Guest guest
While this article does not address children with severe disabilities, I really like the approach this psychiatrist takes toward using a psychiatric diagnosis. I should point out too that even when using a categorical approach to diagnosis (which he does not really support) you are supposed to rule out other conditions that might lead to the same behavior. My favorite example, because it happened to me, is depression. I went through a period of this about 3-4 years ago, and I have reasons to be depressed, but this was something I could not get myself out of. I went to the doctor, and it turned out it was my thyroid. Now by taking synthroid, I no longer have this depression. I did not have depression, I had hypothyroidism. The big question, that none of us can really answer yet, is whether some of our kids have autism, or do they have autistic-like behavior due to CHARGE? It still needs to be treated, of course. But I hope some day we can figure out what the cause is for the behavior we see in CHARGE. See link to article below Tim Hartshorne A Medscape article that might interest you. Guest guest
Tim, In your description of what happened regarding a possible depression diagnosis compared to a definite problem with the thyroid, it would appear that you had depression as a symptom of a problem with the thyroid. In my opinion, autism can be a symptom resulting from some other condition. Perhaps it can be a symptom of problems with the thyroid, perhaps problems with digestion, perhaps problems with language learning, or problems with metabolic deficiencies or imbalances of one kind or another. Even when the source of the problem can be found, such as with the thyroid, sometimes there can be valid reasons to search for the cause of the thyroid problem. To me, this is the issue. What is or are the underlying cause or causes of the autism or autistic-like conditions. What biochemical or neurochemical factors may be affecting our children and friends with CHARGE. There is a wealth of information available on these topics. But to access some of it, one must search under the categroy of autism.
