Well......

I didn't want to say anything but here goes.....

Since I started Atkins in June 2000.....my hair has thinned out big time. I know this can happen anytime you lose alot of weight but it has indeed happened. As far as my gallbladder goes, I had an attack this morning. I never had problems until Atkins but I wasn't eating this much fat either--which causes the attacks. Not blaming Atkins, just what has happened to me.....people who have had the appendix removed have a higher incidence of gallbladder problems....I had mine removed about 12 years ago or so.....so here again, this may or may not be due to Atkins.

As far as my kidneys go, they are fine and still intact....I don't expect any problems LOL

I have been on Atkins for 1 year (next month)... I just got my blood work

back. My Dr did a complete work up.... I don't know which test is which for

the most part, but I do know that when I went in for the results.... EVERY

test was in the absolute normal range. I had cholesterol, liver, kidney,

gallbladder, glucose & more.... (42 in all) I also had an EKG which was

perfect, my BP was 122/74 today, and I have lost over 50 pounds. (I wish it had

been 100....)

If anybody is interested in a particular test let me know the name of it. I

got to keep a copy of the report and when I think about what these type people

say I just show them the blood work! :)

I am 2+ years LC.

Hair loss has been noticed among lowcarbers. Some of what appears to be

hair loss may actually be rapid growth (lots of hair in the comb as dead

hairs are replaced). If you have loss/thinning, it could be vitamin

deficiency; recommend biotin. My hair is longer and faster growing than

ever (and I am getting tired of having to color my white roots long before

the rest of my hair needs it).

Gallbladder and renal failure would have to be combination of special

causes, not simple effects of LC.

http://womenshealth.about.com/health/womenshealth/cs/gallbladder/

http://www.adam.com/ency/article/000501.htm

Adequate water (64 oz minimum) is ESSENTIAL to kidney health (and everything

else in there).

You can be tested for kidney function and gall bladder, and you should

discuss concerns with your doctor. Without understanding their total

medical history and exactly 'how' they were lowcarbing, it is all

speculation on cause and effect.

For one my hair has been thinning horribly. I have been using a very expensive

hair vitamin. I went to an endocronologist and he did a workup..there is no

" chemical " reason, he said maybe stress and maybe diet.

My hair is luscious, and healthy, albeit a touch gray...But Clairol takes care

of that! ;)

Okay, here is my 2 cents of the subject......

(let me just climb up on my soap box)

I used to weigh 325 pounds. My blood pressure ran around 100/150. I took

BP meds. I had these little attacks during the night where my heart would

begin racing for no reason. I could not walk up stairs or anywhere as a

matter of fact without being COMPLETELY out of breath.

Since losing my weight (and Atkins has played a major role), I weigh 188

pounds. My blood pressure is 120/70 and no more meds for that. My

cholesterol is 112. Those heart racing attacks are completely gone. I can

go up and down and up and down stairs or walk, run, jump without gasping for

breath. I am living life and I am happy and proud of myself for what I have

accomplished.

Let me also add, I started my weight loss the hard way, doing low fat. I

lost more hair doing that that I have on Atkins. To be truthful, my hair

has become thicker and healthier since Atkins.

Now, yall tell me, what is healthy?? Before at 325 and health problems OR

188 and living life and loving it? I really get sort of miffed at people

who put Atkins down. I especially get miffed at people who, DO NOT have a

weight problem, put Atkins down. They just don't understand nor do they

know the facts.

Whew!! do I feel better now

(I am climbing down off my soap box)

Sorry for ranting. I think I had more like $1 than 2 cents to say :)

Not exactly, because the American Diabetic Assoc, still reccomends a low fat

diet. :(

I think that if all that is happening in one work place they better check the water!!!!! :) sorry, but that seems a bit too hard to fathom... I have heard so litle bad about the program that to find that much concentrated in one area seems unbelieveable, perhaps it is THEIR take on Atkins that they are doing that is flawed??? who knows....sorry I cant be more scientific in my approach on this answer but it is just one of those wha wha what??? things.. ya know? Low Carb Diet Side Effects?Hello all!I have been Low Carbing for a while, and am doing well on it. However, on another list that I subscribe to, someone was cautioning against the Atkins diet. She said that she has 5 coworkers who are on this diet, and they have all lost their gallbladders, are losing their hair, and one has renal failure. I don't necessarily believe this, if these people are truly experiencing these conditions, there must be some underlying problem. What do you guys think?

Wouldn't low fat make your hair more apt to fall out.

Carol

What percentage of fat are we suppose to be on for the induction. Also, I have looked all through the book and can't find anything on the ketosis strips. Does it matter what time of day you do them. Is it best in the morning?

My 2 cents or whatever you think it's worth :-)

My husband is a kidney transplant recipient, and the

doctors had no problem with him being on the diet as

long as his kidney function was okay. He got blood

work done regularly and the diet showed no change in

kidney function.

Now I must add that just as with everything else

people can be stupid with diets. Maybe these people

were doing what they thought was Atkins and something

happened (i.e. no carbs or water). I had a nurse

taking my blood Friday telling me she has seen

wonderful results from a diet that is called Atkins,

but she couldn't bring herself to try a diet that says

fruit and vege's are bad for you... ARRRRRRRRRRRGH!!

I had soup that had some fatty meat in it. But no, no pork. It also made me sick the night before (diarrhea)....but I wasn't for certain that it was the soup. I found out the next morning when I had some more and I had that gallbladder attack. Not to be graphic but they tell you to check your waste when you have one and it definitely had the 'signs'.

Wytch:

I'm sure if they are, it's not because of the Atkins diet. They may be

experiencing some hairloss, which is normal on any diet. I'm losing some

hair, but nothing to worry about, also, if I pull my hair back into a

barrette it looks funny because all of the new growth sticks right up! As

for the gallbladders, I'd be willing to bet anything that they had

gallbladder conditions already and changing their eating plans probably did

make it more prominent (They may not of known they had these conditions).

Definitely not caused by the Atkins plan. The person with the renal

failure, probably also diabetic.

Finally, I'd be willing to bet that not a single one of those women has

actually read the book and done any research and were eating bacon and eggs

and cream and not eating vegetables and not following the complete plan. A

lot of people do their own made up plan and call it Atkins. " I drank diet

soda and ate nothing but eggs and pork rinds for days and days and I didn't

lose a thing! That Atkins plan is a bunch of hooey! " :D

, Did you have pork at all yesterday? Sometimes when I eat pork

I get sick from it. I think it too rich for my tummy sometimes. What did

you eat?

What is the evidence of this? What exactly was each

person eating each day and for how long? What

supplements were they taking? What were, if any, their

health problems before taking this diet? Were these

people on any medications while on diet? What was

their blood work before and after? What age are these

people? Did they eat enough carbs to balance the diet?

Were they exercising?

Hearsay! Hearsay! Read all about it.

If these kind of scare tactics were true and

scientific, Dr Atkins would be out of business or

barred from the medical profession. Show me the proof.

Did you get your thyroid checked? Someone said it could be because

of a thyroid problem. I also heard that taking biotin helps.

Please take care!!!! Re: Low Carb Diet Side Effects? Thanks for asking. It was pretty painful and I had GI problems (if you get my drift) the rest of the afternoon.....I'm feeling better this morning

The problem actually comes from the years of limiting your fat intake.

I'm only 22 (haven't had years to do much except get fatter and fatter) and I've never been on a low fat diet, so I guess I'm the exception.

I recall that at one time when we went round on the gall bladder issue, it was

shown that it isn't the increase in fat that causes the gall bladder problems.

The problem actually comes from the years of limiting your fat intake. When the

gall bladder didn't have enough to do it sat around developing stones, now that

you've put it to work again those stones are a problem.

As for hair loss, I could use some help myself. I had been intending to ask

Terry about that. Terry, I know you mentioned before the dosage of biotin that

seems to help. It was rogaine and biotin...was there anything else to take to

help with hair loss?

Thank you Terry. I'll have to give it a try.
