Guest guest
My Dad's gastroenterologist suggested taking probiotics to keep his system his check, but he explained that we neededd to educate ourselves first on which strains of lactobacillus were best for which problem. Acidophilous is one of a ghazallion strains of lactobacillus and may not be the best single strain for keeping intestnal yeast in check. The doc had us research (which we did on the web by googling lactobaccillus strains) so that we could try a myriad of strains which might work. As we are all different chemically (same as our fingerprints) what works for one, might not work for the other. It's a very interesting google with lots of info about the various strains, studies done on them and what they can do for the human body. Just thought I'd add that in case someone has already tried the Lactobacillus acidophilous and hasn't had sucess with it. Perhaps they just need to try a different strain. Guest guest
Hello , I take one Colace gelcap in the morning and another at bedtime. That is sufficient sometimes, and others not. When not, I take just one Senna (sennosides 8.5mg) tablet along with the Colace at bedtime and that usually does the trick. For me, if I take more than one tablet I end up getting the “runs,” while I have read from others that they take two at a time. I’d suggest getting Colace and trying that, and if not sufficient, try the Senna with one tablet at bedtime and see what happens….if still “stopped up,” Then maybe add another tablet, but then I’d stay near the restroom ready to “run.” Here’s hoping everything comes out all right (pun intended – grin) Chuck Always as close as the other end of your computer to help address any prostate cancer concerns. Guest guest
Hi , I had constipation throughout my 8 weeks of IGRT. My Oncologist recommended 1 tablespoon of flax seeds in the morning and 1 at night. You can take them stirred into yoghourt or sprinkled over cereal. For the evening ones I used to leave a tablespoonful in a small glass of soymilk all day in the fridge and then drink the resulting gel/drink. It is best to quickly whizz the raw seeds in a blender or grinder before use as the husks can be sharp. I have read on this forum that some Drs do not recommend flax seeds for use with prostate cancer but have not yet seen a medical explanation for this - other that that the bio-availabilty of the Omega3 oils in them is not very high; but then you would be taking them as a drug free solution to constipation not to as an anti cancer agent. You do need to drink at least a litre of water a day while taking them. On a personal note it is now pomegranate season here in Spain and I have a bumper crop all at once! I have a half a pom with muesli, cornflakes or yoghourt in the morning and the other half in the evening in Cous Cous or quite simply straight out of a bowl and believe me they do keep you very regular in my experience! Worth a try if you don't want to take anymore drugs. Guest guest
The next thing to try is warm soapy enema. There is a version of a stool softener that is calcium based rather than sodium based that may be more agreeable for you. However, you need to consult your primary care physician or gastroenterologist to see if further investigation is warranted. Louis. . . Guest guest
I just had prostate surgery on November 2. My catheter comes out tomorrow. Regarding constipation, remember that Colace is not a laxative. I am a registered dietitian and I suggest you use a fiber type laxative that will provide bulk to the stool which can stimulate the colon to contract and expel the stool. The Colace can be taken to facilitate easier passage of the appropriately formed stool. The biggest problem I have is getting rid of the air that they pumped into my abdomen. It is painfully slow to expel. > > > Â > >Try a stool softener. Take it with your evening meal.
